Robert De Niro travelled back in time so he could celebrate his birthday twice.

The 'Taxi Driver' star turned 64 in Melbourne, Australia, on Friday (17.08.07) and attended the launch party of his new Nobu restaurant.

He then flew through time zones by private jet to Hawaii for another birthday party in the Waikiki Parc Hotel branch of Nobu which he opened in May.

The Nobu chain was created after a meeting between De Niro and chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa in Los Angeles over 20 years ago.

De Niro said: "I thought his place was great. I told him, 'If you ever want to open a restaurant in New York, let me know.'

"A year or two later, he called me, said, 'I'm interested.' "

De Niro and Matsuhisa launched the business in 1994 along with Richie Notar and Hollywood producer Meir Teper.

The first restaurant opened in New York.

The chain now has eateries across the world, from Italy to the Bahamas. Waikiki Nobu and Melbourne Nobu are the 18th and 19th branches.
