David Beckham wasn't recognised by White House staff when he took a tour of the home of the US President.

The English soccer superstar was enjoying a VIP tour of the Oval Office with his new Los Angeles Galaxy teammates last week, but despite the stir his move has caused Stateside most people were totally unaware of who he was.

The secretary to President George W. Bush even asked if David - one of the most photographed men in the world - was related to an employee.

A source said: "She didn't recognise him and asked if he was a relative of a staff member. It was all rather embarrassing."

Since relocating to the US 32-year-old David and his Spice Girl wife Victoria have launched a massive publicity campaign.

The couple have conducted numerous separate TV interviews, and posed together for a racy photo shoot for W magazine.

Victoria, 33, has just signed up to play a fat bridesmaid in 'Ugly Betty' in a bid for more exposure.

The super-thin singer - who will star as herself in the special episode of the hit comedy about a glossy fashion magazine - will shock audiences by turning up to the on-screen wedding in a fat suit, pretending to have gorged on calorific treats since her move to America.

An insider said: "Everybody at the wedding will be expecting skinny beautiful Posh to show up.

"But they'll be horrified to see she's piled on the pounds because of major comfort eating and American junk food."
