The 'Analyze This' star is keen to land a lucrative spot as the host of one of US TV's most popular chat shows.
It is believed he would like to take over from Conan O'Brien on NBC show 'Late Night with Conan O'Brien' in two years time.
O'Brien is due to replace popular TV personality Jay Leno on 'The Tonight Show' when Leno quits the show in 2009.
A source is quoted by the New York Post newspaper as saying: "Billy was initially set on Conan O'Brien's slot when Conan takes over from Jay Leno on 'The Tonight Show' but even if that didn't work out he would do something along those lines.
"He's looking for a five-year contract paying $20 million-a-year."
Crystal is no stranger to hosting high profile shows.
The comic has hosted the Academy Awards on no less than eight occasions since 1990, and is known to be popular with his fellow Hollywood stars.
A representative for Crystal said: "There have been no discussions with NBC to take over from Conan."
