There you go Jeremy, you are the hero. You did what a few could do, you saved little souls.

While that was a heroic effort - I don't have all the details to fully appreciate it... where exactly was this bus full of kids when the bridge collapsed? up in the air? Falling slowly into the water? the timeline is all messed up.

Great Job, Jimmy! You are a hero in everyone's eyes, especially to the children's parents, if not to the children themselves.

Good on you!

I got labelled 'hero' by an accident that made me a disabled vet... YOU are a hero because you jumped in when needed.

God bless you!

He rocks. Character. It's a good thing he had it. There are many people who would either freeze or be in the flight mode. He not only saved kids, but the hearts and lives of 100 potentially miserable and tortured parents. I would like to have this persons address to send him a thank you. Is that possible?

Send to,

I wish there were more young people like that who think of others rather than themselves.

Also, I haven't heard anything about the bus driver. I think they were heroic controlling and eventually stopping the bus before it dove headlong into they mighty Mississipi.

It is so heartening to see real heroism on the news. Jeremy Hernandez reacted with his heart for the sake of those scared kids in his care. So many of today's news stories relate to death, dismemberment and disingenuous and criminal behavior of the Bush administration that it almost possible to forget that every day, people put into similarly dangerous situations react without thought to their own safety. I wonder if George W. is aware of how many other bridges and other infrastructure are compromised due to budget cuts offered by his previous Repuglican-led congress (continuing Reagan era budget cuts for services and infrastructure). It seems that most of the money needed to fix the system is funnelled into the Iraq conflict, including billions of dollars spent on no-bid contracts. George has offers his condolences and prayers to the families of the people killed last night. Somehow, I doubt that will be enough. If I were the president, I would try very hard to stay as far away from the situation as possible, knowing that my administration is complicit in the disaster. I predict, however, that George W. will soon have a photo op with Mr. Hernandez.

Wonderful to see actions like this, and covered in the media, too! God bless you!!

I hope you do get your moment in the spotlight, so to speak. You deserve it!!

The poster right above me is the perfect picture of how the liberal media and the lemmings who follow them can turn anything into a political debate. Yeah, G.W.B. stood right under that bridge and toppled it, personally. Suuure. If you, or any of those who don't support the good we're trying to do over there could know, even for a moment, the thankfulness of those we're positively impacting over there, you'd change your tune instantly...Try thinking for yourself sometime and not just following CNN's pied pipers.

Great job Hernandez..! We are grateful for caring so much for these kids and not thinking just about yourself. I hope you will have a great life (and you are so young). All the kids will remember you for ever.

When I read about what happened--watched videos where Jeremy Hernandez and 'his' kids are interviewed (and Jeremy is right; they ARE a part of him)...and also after hearing a Minneapolis TV newsreader talk about the circumstances which led to Jeremy working at Waite House for 5+ years...

...I'm reminded of the novel A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving. The title character is an eccentric young man who believes he has a divinely-ordained purpose in life: to sacrifice himself to save the lives of children. And in a way almost impossible to imagine (yet somehow believable), Owen turns out to have been absolutely correct.

We must create a foundation dedicatd to helping the survivors, and the families affected by this disaster. The people who were on that bus--including those who were able to walk away, including Jeremy and the other youth workers, and including the kids--many will be reliving painful memories of this event. Their ordeal is not over.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a very real illness, and no one can overcome it without help. As a society we owe it to them--to ALL of them--to gather together our resources to bring them the help they are almost certainly going to need.
