Older Talkback
As a former Minneapolis resident, I am extremly proud of you, Jeremy.
I think I heard that you have been working with this social program for
underprivileged children for 5 years. And you are only 20 yourself.
It shows that age, political or economic status does not make a hero.
Genuine character does and you have it. Your own parents must be
very proud for raising such an upstanding young man. Congratulations! and thank you.
I am so proud that we share the same last name. People like you are too far and in between. If, God forbid, I should ever be placed in the same situation as you, I hope I will muster an ounce of courage you displayed.
Take care and the very best to you.
David
Barry,
You ARE a hero. You are a veteran of the United States. Thank you for your service. You were able to recognize a fellow hero in Jeremy Hernandez!
Indeed an act of self abnegation that will draw official attention ,no doubt .However do the people in the USA realise that 25 percent of their bridges are structurally deficient ?As well as 20 percent of the rest of the civil infrastructures such as dams, roadworks, schoolbuildings, levees, etc .A 2005 official survey is revealing this sad figures .Your federal government has cut budgets in order to increase military spending .It is no surprise that the miltary expenses for 2008 as proposed by Bush is to raise again, whilst the budgets for health care and education are to be diminished of course .Sooner or later the american taxpayer will be presented with the bill for delayed maintenance .The bill will be very expensive .
This guy is incredible- I read that he wanted to become a mechanic, but couldn't afford the tuition. Is there a college fund for him set up yet that we can donate to?
The guy is no hero - the bus already passed the bridge, and was at the very end. Now if it was drowning, that would be a different story.
Don't open your mouth to speak unless you know what you're talking about, John. The kids could have very easily panicked and tried to go out through a window and end up in the river. In fact, if they had moved about randomly, it was very possible for the bus to tip over. The truck in front of them had also caught fire so they were in danger of smoke inhalation. This young man did not know if the bridge was even going to hold long enough for him to get all the kids out but he stayed anyway. A lesser man, like you, I suspect, would run at the first rumbling after the initial collapse. This man is a hero and does not deserve your slanderous words.
Jen L.: I believe the bus had just crossed past the over-water section when the bridge went. If they'd been a few seconds behind schedule they'd have gone into the water.
I think this magnificent young man is going to find he has several hundred more relatives today than he did on Wednesday morning. That's from all those kids' parents, brothers and sisters, uncles, aunts, and cousins who will consider him part of their own family forever.
Jeremy Hernandez..a true hero.
May god bless you.
I think Jeremy Hernandez should have a college fund set-up for him. He is a hero and deserves as much. Anyone who says he's not, is jealous that they don't have an ounce of character that Jeremy Hernandez has.
Jeremy Hernandez you are a hero. I strive to be as brave as you.
Long live Jeremy Hernandez!
Very nice story. I'm glad the kids survived such a horrible event.
Honest HUMILITY......is very rare, in these modern times .
Well done Sir..may my blessings go with you and your family.
Good Luck.
One definition of humility is:
“The superior man is modest in his speech but exceeds in his actions”
Confucious
Confucius
“Perceiving one’s place in the world, not according to one’s accomplishments, but according to the intrinsic value of all individuals”.
In other words, if no person is regarded better than any other (i.e. we all have our own equal value in the world) then there is nothing to be conceited about.
I guess America is starving for a hero and I don't see one here. Jeremy simply opened the door of a bus that was stopped, upright, and in no danger. If after he let the children out they got run over by an emergency vehicle would he still be a hero?
Nothing I say can touch the height of what you did. I just have a few pitiful words: Thank you saving those lives. You are a true hero.
You have brought tears to my eyes knowing that there are good people like you in the world. Thank you, Jeremy.
I just heard on the news that Jeremy was previously going to college. If he needs a few bucks to help pay his tuition I will send him $50. I'm sure there are others who are willing to help. If a reputable organization wants to set up a way to collect, this would be a nice thank you gesture.
Peter. He did a good job by offering those kids a lending hand however they would all still be alive today if he weren't on the bus. Thanks for staying and helping Jeremy. You gave some of those kids comfort and security. God bless you.
Peter A.: Read the reports. Look at Hernandez's interview on CNN. He spent half an hour after the collapse getting kids out and getting them to safety. All through that time he *didn't* *know* what was really happening. He could see something terrible had happened to the bridge, but he *didn't* *know* why, or if anything worse would happen. He *didn't* *know* if the collapsed section he was on was going to give way and kill him, even as it rumbled beneath his feet. And he didn't run for his life, though he admits he was terribly scared. He stayed and worked the scene until he *knew* *for* *a* *fact* that there were no more children remaining, that they were all away. And then he left.
And you question this?
Thank God you were there along with all the people that helped you, as a parent, a thing like this really gets to you and to know that people like you exist restores our faith. God Bless You!
