The 'Chicago' star has to rely on getting parts based on his status in Hollywood because he is "the world's worst auditioner".
He told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper: "It's a miracle I've ended up where I am because I'm the world's worst auditioner.
"Based on an audition, I don't think I would ever get a job. I am just too nervous and I hate people judging me."
A string of hits spanning over his 30-year career, including 'American Gigolo', 'Pretty Woman' and the Oscar-winning 'Chicago', have put Gere in a position where he rarely has to compete with other actors for roles.
The 57-year-old star will next be seen on screen in 'The Hoax', which tells the true story of fraudster Clifford Irving.
Irving landed a book deal worth £500,000 in 1971 by pretending to have penned an authorised life story on reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes.
'The Hoax' is set for release next month.
