Victoria Beckham's tip mistake
Jul 27, 2007, 7:00 GMT
Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes allegedly angered a waitress after refusing to leave her a tip.
The Spice Girl and the 'Batman Begins' star, who have become firm friends in recent months, were enjoying lunch at the Mondrian Hotel's Asia de Cuba restaurant in Hollywood.
However, after settling the bill, which Katie is said to have paid in full, the Baltimore Sun newspaper reports the pair didn't leave the waitress a tip, which is customary in the US.
When the girl tried to run after the stars, she was reportedly stopped by Victoria's security team.
The 33-year-old singer - who recently moved to Los Angeles with husband David and their three sons after he signed a multi-million dollar contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team - has a reputation for being frugal with money.
Despite having millions in the bank, David said his wife is very sensible when it comes to splashing her cash and has to put a curb on his spending.
He recently revealed: "Victoria is the one who tells me, 'You can't pay for that'. She's the sensible one who tells me not to be so silly,"
"She will tell me in a restaurant just to get a cheap bottle of wine, so I tell her it only cost £15 when really it cost much more. She's the sensible one in the relationship who watches where the money goes."

I wonder how good the service was. Hmm. I can see Victoria thinking she won't have to tip because they don't tip in the UK. In either case, it was bad form on the waitress's part to run after the celebrities. That is just ghetto. That's happened at other restaurants as well. A tip is exactly that, just a tip.
Actually, wait staff in the US depend on tips for their livelihood. It's not the same as it is in the UK. In some cases, 90% of a US server's wages comes from tips, so if you don't leave one, they feel you are actually stealing from them.
In the UK, it's a nice wee bonus - not so here. It's very bad form not to tip at least 15%.
In other parts of the world, tipping is actually seen as insulting, as if you are saying to the person that they are hard-up.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do ... so if you come to the US, Posh, bloody well tip!!!

Tipping is a very american thing, where it is assumed a tip will be given irrespective of whether a worker has actually done anything to deserve it, and the implication is that if you don't tip you won't get good service.
In other countries this is called bribery or baksheesh, or even demanding money with menaces
