Mischa Barton used to dress like a "punk".

The former 'The O.C.' star - known for her stylish fashion sense - has confessed she didn't always dress so well.

Mischa said: "You'd get sneakers made into high heels or cut up your clothing and put pins on your shirt and bags. Then I was into the sweatpants look - hip-hop didn't pass me by."

Nowadays, the 21-year-old actress has designers such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Calvin Klein clamouring for her to wear their clothes.

Although she loves clothes, Mischa doesn't like the negative attention that comes with being a fashion icon.

She said: "It's a cruel game, and a lot of the magazines and media have such bad taste in clothes. In the 'What were they thinking?' pictures, sometimes they're right, but sometimes you think, 'What? That's cool. She's just being herself.' Everyone wants to dress individually. People say they love my style but I also get insulted all the time for the things I wear."

Mischa will star in Richard Attenborough's World War Two film 'Closing the Ring' later this year.
