The 52-year-old actor, whose wife Christine Baumgartner gave birth to Cayden Wyatt Costner last month, worries he'll die before his son becomes a man.
He said: "My fundamental fear is that I will die and someone else will have to raise my new baby.
"I fear I won't get to coach him in terms of what it is to be a man."
The 'Rumour Has It' star says he no longer has the energy he had when raising his other children - Annie, 23, Lily, 20 and Joe, 19 - with his first wife Cindy Silva.
Costner admits he uses underhand tactics to get his younger wife - who is 19 years his junior - to look after their baby during the night.
He said: "I sometimes fake sleep so my wife will get up to feed or rock him."
Costner also has a 10-year-old son Liam from his relationship with socialite Bridget Rooney.
The actor is currently earning rave reviews for his performance as a serial killer in psychological thriller 'Mr Brooks'.
