Mandy Moore felt like "someone dimmed the lights" when she was depressed.
The actress-and-singer suffered depression a few years ago and admits it was a dark time in her life.
Mandy said: "I'm a pretty positive person, but about a year and a half ago, I felt like someone dimmed the lights.
"I've said depressed before, but it wasn't that I was incapable of going about my day. I just felt sad and confused. I was asking, 'Am I really the person I want to be? Am I really fulfilled?'
"I noticed that my posture was sort of hunched over, and I wasn't good at taking compliments.
"I came to terms with that through writing this record. My new song 'Extraordinary' is about stepping up to the plate and going, 'I'm not going to apologise for feeling great about myself.' "
The 23-year-old has just finished recording her new album and admits her split from 'Scrubs' star Zach Braff inspired some of the songs.
She said: "I adore Zach, and we're still friendly. But I'm aware that people will hear some of these songs and pick apart the lyrics, interpret what they will. It's a weird position to be in."
