Jessica Alba has laid down some sweeping and unkind remarks at the American Latino community. Her own Mexican roots is a subject she would prefer to be glossed over.

Perez Hilton, the celebrity blogger, a Miami American-Cubano himself, was irate as he posted her comments about her own heritage:

"I've got cousins galore. Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out."

"My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn't speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose."

Perez does not disclose a source where he got the info; but some digging yielded that his post is a compilation of several separate comments Jessica made in past interviews.  The first and worst quote comes from an old interview with Eric Gladstone on Homunculus.com. source

Context is everything.  Hilton wove a patchwork quilt of ethnic smacks that makes the star of the "Silver Surfer" look really harsh.  It will be interesting to see how her people handle this growing brush fire.

Third generation anyone here in the USA is squarely an "American."  There is no obligation to label yourself Italian, Irish or even Latina after that many generations have been here. She has every right to say she's just an American.

But there will be more to this story, you can bet on it.

I praise Jessica for wanting to be an All American Girl! By all means Jessica is right in her comments - finally someone stating the truth. If you are going to be part of the America and be an American then you should do as all of other cultures and learn to read/write and speak english - American-style. Of all the many cultures of people who come to this country for a better way of life, Mexicans are the only ones who believe they are owed something - mainly because they are not forced to learn to read/write and speak english like the Cambodians, Vietnamese, Chinese, Greek, Hatians, Cubans, French, etc. which is unacceptable! If you don't want to be an American - go back to your native country and stop plaguing America with your ignorance.

I don't understand why people say that Hispanics are not forced to read or write english. One of the requirements for Immagration is that you have to know how to read, write and understand USA History. So I think that even if you are from the US or anywhere else and have hispanic or any other race. It doesn't change where you came from and you should never forget your heritage. It not against the law and you are not breaking it as well. I think that how we are and where we came from is what makes each one different and interesting.

Wow! I can't believe how ignorant people can be. Reading a few comments down I noticed someone say that if mexicans live in America then they must learn to speak, read and write it. Well my question is... Who the hell told you Mexican people didn't want to learn the language? Now, just because you've met a couple of ignorants who probably don't want to or are afraid to learn it doesn't really define all mexican people!

If you want to get into this a little deeper and discuss education or bilingual education for that matter you're obviously going to have to educate yourself a little bit more about that subject! The point of it is that we do need to learn English if we're are going to live in this country but at the same time why should we have to forget the language that our ancestors spoke. Why is it that people wouldn't want their children to learn more than one language? The more the better??? Right?? Heck I jump at the opportunity to learn different languages!

So all things said and done, if Jessica made all of this comments then she is just an ignorant girl who doesn't really know what she's saying. Ignorance, ignorance and more ignorance is all I have to say about her!

For those of you who say I am ignorant, try living in a city where the mexicans don't speak english, don't understand english and to clarify a point - knowing and understanding US History has nothing to with knowing and learning english. These people come here and think they can do what they want because they have been made to believe so. They drive without insurance, they are here illegally, they do not speak or understand a lick of english and they are diminishing the middle class as we know it. I am sure that not one of you individuals is of any nationality other than hispanic, because if you were - you would understand where I am coming from. I was born and raised here, my people were dragged here from their country and forced to be slaves - our language and our history virtually stolen from us until we started the groups that promoted racial equality, education, food surplus programs, etc.

SayitLoud, I really feel for your culture and what they have been through, but you said it yourself.... Your language and your history virtually stolen from you. Obviously this wasn't right! So obviously we won't put down the fight for our culture and language. I'm sure you understand. So yes we will educate our children to learn to speak English (read and write it as well)but at the same time it is important to always remember where we came from so that we can appreciate this opportunity we've been given and not take it for granted. It's really sad that there are people out there who don't know their roots or choose to deny them.

I am a second generation American , My father came here legally and learned to speak the English language at his work, but doesn't speak it very well. In mexico he only got to 4th grade because he had to work in order to have food to eat. So to say that he is ignorant as SAY IT LOUD says is ignorant also. How can someone learn the language if they dont know how to even read or write their own language??? That doesn't make a person ignorant or stupid. Put yourself in their shoes, would you be able to learn a foreing language??

At home we always speak spanish even to this day. At work and school I speak English of course. I am now married and my kids are third generation American. At home I continue to speak Spanish and my kid didn't know any english when he went into Kindergarten this year. So does this make me ignorant?? Within months my son was speaking English just fine . He has white, black asian little friends and that is what makes America great. I'm sure my kids will master the English language and at the same time be fluent in spanish which is what I want. My sister on the other hand has a kid and refuses to speak spanish to him, so know the kid can hardly say a word in spanish , to me she is ignorant. I take my kids with me when i go to Mexico every year to visit my parents homeland. They love it down there . I think it's good for them to love where they came from. They will learn not to be ashamed of where they come from and this will make them more humble. At least I hope I'm doing the right thing.

to clarify a point - knowing and understanding US History has nothing to with knowing and learning english. Sayit out loud I meant for you to understand that not all Hispanics that come here are ignorant. Some as you may know are here legally and to accomplish that knowing to read and write is a requirement. There are many different people that come from all over the world and don’t know how to speak English but that doesn’t make them ignorant. Would you say that to someone that came from China, Japan, Africa, or Brazil. That’s not even the discussion the discussion is what did we think of Jessica’s comment. The NCLR is an organization for people who are proud to be Mexican American and fight for our civil rights here in America! I am proud to say that i am proud to be in this organization. Mexicans couldn't make Mexico work so they had to flee and come to the USA (illegally of course). If Mexico is so great, why do you have to leave it? Latinos have:
- the lowest education level (about 60% of these losers drop out of high school)
- highest teen pregnancy rate
- 2nd highest birth out-of-wedlock rate (next to black women)
- highest crime rate
- lowest personal savings rate
- lowest home ownership rate
- highest rate of drunk driving
- higest obesity rate
- highest gang membership rate

All 12 year old latino boys want to join a gang. All 12 year old latino girls do is dream of having a baby. Very primitive people. Don't you people have any self respect??? Do you have any dignity???? You have to come to the USA with your hands out begging for things from Whites and Jews? Get some self-respect!!!!!!!

Given the above, you expect Jessica Alba to want to be known as a latino????

Well Jim let me ask you ... Do you have any self dignity??? Do you have to make yourself look like an a## in order to express your racist thoughts? I feel sorry for your close minded ideals....

The fact that we have a high school drop out rate, high pregnancy rate etc... doesn't change the fact that those people are here to stay... In case you haven't noticed. And people like you sure aren't helping the issue at hand. There is no need to waste any breath on you because after all your statements, I have only one thing to say. You are a close minded racist that is very quickly becoming the minority and instead of embarrasing your own race with your racist remarks, you should go back to selling houses and close your mouth..... And that's as low as I'm stooping for you....

Oh and by the way, I would sure like you know where all of your 'facts' are coming from..... lol

If you attended college, you probably were accepted because whites and Jews permitted you to be accepted (ie. affirmative action). Affirmative action means that we had to lower the standards for latinos because otherwise none of you people would attend college.

Enough of the nonsense... Like someone mentioned earlier, each race has their own flaws. We shouldn't sit here and degrade ourselves and our race by arguing over things that can't really be solved. They're opinions and nothing more! All we can really do is try and raise our own children with a positive mentality on life and on other cultures! We can sit here and pick on every race and try and find things to talk about but the truth of the matter is every race has things and people who don't really represent them well.... It's LIFE!!!!

Jessica isn’t in denial of her Mexican roots. She’s always made mention of everything that’s in her mix (Mexican, French Canadian, and Dutch, I believe). She’s never tried to hide anything. She just doesn’t want to be called a Latina. The Mexican side of her family has been in America for a few generations. She doesn’t speak Spanish. She feels very American.

Why is it that “ethnic” looking actors and actresses have to connect and/or identify with their roots, whereas others are allowed to be, or are accepted as, regular old Americans.

Actress Kate Hudson is 1/4 Italian. We don’t insist that she only relate to that part of her heritage, and call herself Italian American. Cameron Diaz is half Cuban. We don’t insist that she call herself a Latina, or disregard her mother’s heritage and refer to herself as Cuban-American. Frankie Muniz (Malcom in the Middle) is half Puerto Rican, we don’t refer to him as Latino, or insist that her refer to himself as Puerto Rican.

As far as whites not accepting Jessica as one of their own goes, only racist white people would feel that way. At the same token, only racist non-whites would insist that she isn’t white, and would remind her of it as well. The rest of us wouldn’t care, and would embrace her as American — one of us. In actuality, I think there are more non-whites that insist she’s ethnic than whites. Most of us really don’t care.

Most Americans are very ethnically, and sometimes racially, mixed. A lot of us make mention, and are proud of, what’s in our individual combinations, just like Jessica is. But all in all we feel American. That is to say, we connect more with being American than anything else. We’re not like most other homogeneous societies, and that’s what makes us Americans unique.

I think the reason people are lashing out at Jessica is because she has made comments that degrade mexican american people, not because she looks like one.
And as far as any of those actors mentioned previously, I've never heard of any of them making any degrading comments towards anyone of their ethnicities........ correct me if I'm wrong.... and if they do i'm sure they'll get a very similar reaction..

And as far as jessica not wanting to be called latina, well then maybe she should consider not allowing herself to be featured on Latina style magazine or any other hispanic magazines......

The point is that the comments she made were inappropriate..

Many Americans that live in this country do not even bother learing English; most American expect everyone to know English. What a dumb ass coment, just because your American, that doth not mean you are not something else. This nation is a melting pot ignoramus. Black people will always be black, they may be American, but that does not mean they are not black. Chinese will always be Chinese, but just because they are third or fourth generation American that in itself does not mean there heritage is not Chinese. They stiil may be 100% American, But they heritage still remains Chinese and/or black. Eisenhower was German, American first certainly, but Deutch by heritage. Italians and Irish, just because they are third or fourth generation American and don't speak Gaelic or Italian it does not negate their heritage.
Alba is latina, perhaps American first, but latina still. My family is from Honduras, but American first and foremost, I love the US and shall defend it. But Honduras and my hispanic heritage shall always be in my heart, just like it is in (most) Irish Americans, Italians Americans, English Americans, Swedish Americans or whatever else.
I shan't ever deny my heritage. I'm proud of it.
My parents both speak English, but in my home, they only spoke Spanish. I have a 3 year old son, and a two year old daughter, and I speak perfect English, I even think in English, not in Spanish, but I only speak to to my babesin Spanish, and like me, there to will be All American.
I really use to like J Alba, but now, I really see her as a ignorant person and thus really dislike her, it would take a really weak,if not stupid person to be ashamed of what they are.
She speaks no truth.
She is just an ingnorant insecure chick who is stupidly ashamed of what she is. Y didn't she just take a screen name like many singers, authors and actors do. I don't think Jessica Alba is ashamed being known as a latina, but I think shes tired playing latina roles because the way she looks. Not all hispanics are tan, dark hair, with brown eyes..my family has a history of blue/green eyes, fair skined etc. however thats besides the point. I plan in teaching my children spanish/english, and why not, maybe some other language. People move to the U.S to live a better life, isn't that what everyone wants? I believe everyone should have equal rights! U.S is an immigrant country, latinos, white, black, italian etc. This country is made up of different cultures. I didn't even hear about this till today and I am a little surprised by some of things Jessica said. I am hispanic, and I am not fuelt in spanish. My Mom didn't speak spanish and I wasn't raised in a Mexican environment. I was born here in America and I am an American. But I would never EVER say that I am not hispanic cause I don't speak spanish and because I wasn't raised that way. I am who I am including my ancestors who may be Mexican, Indian, Spanish and so forth. I would love to learn about my heritage. And I would ebrace it cause that is who I am. The fact that she says that she feels that 'she has finally cut loose' That is so hurtful. Like being latina is a bad thing or something....She may not be a full out latina like Eve Longoria or Salma Hayek. But I just don't understand why she would make such statements about being latina that seems so bad. I do like the girl. I think she is a beautiful girl who is a great actress. I just don't see why she would feel negative towards being latina. If she said things that were misconstrued, I hope she clears it up. But I don't know how she will.

Real Latinos come from Italy. I don't even consider Spanish to be Latino. Latino comes from the Romans (Italian) which spoke Latin. My Parents both came from Italy and I consider myself 100% Latino. I do not like Mexicans calling themselves Latino. Why do Mexicans and Hispanics consider themselves Latino? I'm guessing it is to more White or European. When you call yourself Latino that means your ashamed of your native american roots.

I KNOW THIS IS A BIT LATE BUT,
To SayItLoud and Jim Cohen: I just wanted to remind you that the majority of Mexican people are a mixture of Native American and Spanish; both of which were in America long before your people. Yes, Christopher Columbus is acknowledged to have made the first contact with the Native Americans but the first colonies were settled by Spanish explorers.(You can look up the histories of both Florida and Texas) My parents came here (legally) from Mexico and I speak Spanish and English fluently; as a matter of fact, I speak English better than most Caucasians I know. I am proud to be American and Mexican. I'm more patriotic than most Caucasians because I know being here has provided me with so many oppportunities, so I appreciate America more. Mr. Cohen, being Jewish, you of all people should be sensitive to this matter. Yes, your people have experienced alot of discrimination and many times in history, your people have had to seek asylum in other countries to escape that bigotry.(google the holocause, learn a little about your people.) I could go on and on but let me just end with this: THE RICHEST MAN IN THE WORLD, CARLOS SLIM, IS MEXICAN!!!!!

I was deeply offended by Jessica Alba's seemingly anti-latino comments. It really comes across that she is not proud of her Mexico roots. I can relate to her situation. I'm half African American, half Venezuelan in a country where many people would label me solely as African American. But my ancestry is more complexed than that. I'm also over a quarter Venezuelan Amerindian, and proud of all of my ancestors. They all are responsible for me existing here in the now present. Jessica should really read all of the things she has said and realize that those insults only reflect her own insecurity and self-hatred.

I see her point,She doesn't want to be stereo typed along with these people. What's wrong with thinking your better than that. 'can she change her blood?' No but why should that matter. She can say what she wants. And do what she wants. Why should she have to bow to the losers that are just upset that she is one of them, but doesn't want to be 'like' them.

Nothing wrong with that. She can do and say what she wants. I hope she considers hereself white. And she is an American more than what you think she is. Get your own life. Besides i bet most of you people are not really proud of who you are. You wish you were born of another race. But I doubt any race is void of idiots just like you anyway. For you to be offended means your guilty of feeling the same way.And you want to punish someone else in place of yourself. If you believe in your Race,You wouldn't have so much hate and discontent for one of them. It's all a Sham. She one up on you all.

Thank god she can see clearly that the mexican population is so irresponsible that she doesn't claim it. why should she? She is third generation!!! I'm a third generation Native America, that means nothing in this country, so why is everyone hating on her for her opinions of the general population of Mexicans? Look at it from the other shoe. Is that statement no matter how offensive not somewhat true? I live in an almost all Mexican neighborhood in Florida, and I see it for myself. 4 to 7 kids per family on just my road!!!!! Trying to drive to work in the morning while a gathering of kids from one home parade to the bus stop is getting irritating, and Mexican parents don't care enough to teach manners and proper English so they can manage as just a regular individual. Stop being so stuck on a culture that not everyone shares, if you don't like it, then go back to your roots and stop picking on people who just choose the AMERICAN way.. Don't be a hypocrite. Not to mention statistics say that more than half the Mexicans in Florida are over here illegally anyway. If everyone likes it over here so much, then work harder to be part of our country, not the problem. PEACE I LOVE YOU JESSICA

Maybe everyone here is Hispanic but what most people in America don't know that Mexico, Central America and South America, we are all multi-cultural we have our Mexican culture and most of our ancestors came from all around Europe. But with that I am third generation in the U.S. ( I won't say America because America is all the way up north of U.S. to Chile in South America). I am very proud of where my grandparents are from and I love being a part of it. All of America is Multi-Cultural there are people from all over the world. It is sad that her grandfather was afraid of who he was just to fit in. My family also goes to the type of places that were listed above and people see that that we like being who we are and they respect us for it. But Jessica is big enough and she should of come with her own understanding of the culture. She looks mexica like the first people in Mexico before it was colonized by the Europeans. To SayITLoud, I believe where you are getting your information is from the news and word of mouth, didn't you know that they are overrated it's obvious you just have to open up, because the way you write it sound to me like your hurt, stubborn I don't know I. You are probably a smart person and it's a shame that you hva the education in your hand and you don't learn more about where people came from and their struggles. I feel bad about what happened to your culture and I have learned a lot about it and had a class about it in College and it's really atrocious. So to Jessica I guess she is ignorant.

Europeans were the first immigrants to this country, if anything they're the ones that invaded this country 'spread their seeds and popped their babies'. The Native Americans were already here, yet they were forced to leave their territories and live in reservation camps. I am sorry for what your ancestors have gone through, this is not a competion to see which race has suffer the most. Nobody should be denied the right to their language and culture. I myself am Mexican, nothing has been handed to me. I have worked hard for everything I have and to be where I am at now. I am very greatful for what this country has offered me but I am not ashamed and will never deny my roots. Either way, people can deny their roots but they will never 'cut loose', for it's in their blood. It seems like you are hating on the wrong people, just because we still maintain our culture and native language.

Lastly, can someone explain to me what an American is? I've honestly never met someone with pure American blood. This country is referred to as the 'melting pot' for a reason, for the many people from different ethnic groups and religions that live here. We need to respect and honor our differences that is what makes us unique, and this country so interesting and great!

I completely understand what jessica is saying about her grandfather. but i dont agree with her saying she's not latina. her features and skin is what makes her so beautiful. I myself am mexican/AMERICAN and im also 4th generation. my FAMILIA has been here for a very very very long time. So when she talks about her grandfather i can relate. my great grandparents and grandparents went threw BS just cause they spoke spanish. you had to learn english in those days. If you wanted to be successful in this country you spoke ENGLISH. If you didnt want to mow lawns and be a housekeeper all your life you spoke ENGLISH. what my grandparents fought for hispanic civil rights and rights in the military is greatly forgotten and strongly disrespected and ignored by many mexicans and 1st generation mexicans. so these bloggers here saying disgrace to her race. alot of them probably havent been in this country awhile. like i said i disagree with her denying her race. she needs to embrace her culture and roots even if she doesnt speak spanish and be secure in her skin. Cause being mexican american is very tough. you either critized at times by whites (kkk)and alot from mexicans because our spanish isnt good enough or were not mexican enough. thats a true disgrace.

It is strange to see Jessica Alba making such extremely racists comments, when she herself claims to be void of racism herself, but I think what is going on is what's known as The Hollywood Syndrome. This is where any comment made by an actor, actress, music singer, or musical group...feel not only entitled to say whatever they want, but that if it seens by the majority of the press as insensitive, that because it was said by them, they shouldn't be held accountable for their actions, words or deeds. Well I say, you get what you deserve. If you're making billions of dollars off of movie patrons, television viewers, or concert attendees...then you best be careful of who you offend, because eventually it will catch up to you and ruin your sorry career. All in all though, Jessica Alba is just your typical Hollywood Snobbish Triler Park Trash, and Latino fans should boycott and protest at all of her movies, and send letters to her publicist and agents, denouncing her for her actions, misdeeds, and negative racist comments.

Why do the comments of Alba anger so many people? We are supposedly taught to be tolerant in this country, but obviously, only if we tolerate what we agree with! My 6 month old has been spoken to in Spanish and English since birth, and I want her to know the culture of Mexico City very well. But, she's my daughter--Jessica Alba isn't. So what if that's her opinion? Why should it influence my life at all?

She's an actress for goodness sake. Why do we let Hollywood influence us so much in this country?!?!

Well im a sixteen yr. old girl doing a reasearch project of my choice on immigration and americas ignorance and injustice with them as a whole. I might not be hispanic by blood but im sure hispanic by heart! I was adopted by panamanians. They took me in and made me their own. I am extremely proud to be who i am. Sadly unlike you jessica i know where i came from and i know where i am now and i embrace that i love it. My kids will be third generation but thats not going to stop me from teaching, telling and keeping them insited with OUR heritage as a family. But I will also teach them them as much as i can possible on who they are both outside my adoption as well. Im not ashamed of who i was before or who i am now maybe you should see it the way i do. You say your people were stolen from their country with all heritage striped from them, well knowing that should make you want to learn more about where you came from and who you are! Im not trying to down grade on you im just telling you what i see, and what it is, is pure ignorance against your own kind. Im not saying that you are wrong for thinking of yourself as an 'American', just open your eyes and try to see the way the immigrants in your city are trying to live. Yes, of course they believe that they can make it because they know where they come from, and it wasnt the awesomest but at least they are trying to make it better by making something out of themselves in America, hmm.. kinda sounds like you and your little stardom you have. But hint, hint i bet you they are not going to forget or drop who they they truly are.Just thought to give input. Hope you understand.
Still gt love,

Right on Jessica! All Americans are descendents from immigrants, but our ancestors came here to escape hardships and obsticles in the old country and to embrace the land of opportunity so that their children and their children's children could have the honor and privelage to call themselves American, regardless of their ethnic/religious background.... we are all American and should take pride in that. It is not a slap in the face to want to cut your linguistic and cultural ties, it's a slap in the face to want to retain them after all your parents and grandparents went through to make sure that you were raised in America.

Okay first I would like to say Jessica Alba is a self hating coconut. If it wasn't for her being Mexican she would literally not be half the woman she is. Seriously if she wasnt Latina she wouldn't even be beautiful. Latinos come here because their situation in their home country is difficult and they domt have the necessary means to survive, that is why they immigrate here. There is opportunity here, but with the good also comes the bad. Immigrants must face discrimination and racism, such as the Minutemen and people like Jim Chode-hen.
I would like to say that all these Latino hating individuals and groups need to find something else to focus their energy on. Latinos are an intricate and vital part to the culture of the USA. We are here to live and prosper and we are doing a very good job at it.
Also a shout out to all mi gente Latino!!!!! Todos unidos and much love to all misMexicanos, Boricuas, Colombianos Dominicanos, Cubanos, Salvadoreños, and all the rest. Adelante mi gente, keep on dominating! Xoxo La Mexicana
