Although the former Spice Girl admits she was slightly disappointed that Virgin lost faith in her, she realised it could be the best thing for her career because she has now set up her won record label.
Mel said: "I knew they were starting to lose faith in me, so I was actually quite relieved to go.
"I looked at my options and starting my own label was the most exciting thing. Of course there's a financial risk there.
"If it doesn't work I'll be gutted, but I'll have a great time spending that money."
The 33-year-old singer recently revealed she is ready to become a mother.
Mel - the only Spice Girl yet to fall pregnant - said: "I'd really love to be a mum one day."
However, she is aware having a baby is a life-changing experience and it is not a commitment she will take lightly.
She said: "When you find yourself in that position your freedom goes so I'm weighing it all up. My mum looks forward to having grandchildren."
The singer has been with her property developer boyfriend Tom Starr for five years and she knows he is the one she wants to spend the rest of her life with.
She added: "He's my one forever."
