Quentin Tarantino has recut and re-introduced his Grind House film portion, "Death Proof", where cars and chicks slither across the screen. The movie has been entered in the 22-strong field competing for the festival's Palme d'Or, won over critics for its homage to the cheesy, grainy seventies flicks Tarantino was raised on.

"Tarantino's road-rage opus so far exceeds almost anything made at the time in terms of dialogue and performance that it seems like a different beast, one half plotless gabfest, the other half insane car chase," Variety's Todd McCarthy wrote. "Death Proof" follows the rules of the grind house style of exploitation films, Tarantino said in an interview with AP reporters. It has "a girl raising up at the end to beat the bogeyman." . Kurt Russell stars as the stuntman. Rose McGowan as one of the girls who gets an interesting prosthetic leg, and Harvey Weinstein was the producer of the film.
