Johnny Depp's greatest film role is Captain Jack Sparrow.

The swashbuckling pirate was overwhelmingly declared the actor's best role by fans voting at www.pearlanddean.com.

Sparrow, the central character in the massively successful 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise, received 57 per cent of the votes, well ahead of Depp's portrayal of Edward Scissorhands, which garnered 17 per cent.

Depp's pirate performance has been credited with fuelling the success of the first two 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies, which together took more than $1 billion worldwide.

The third film, 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End', is set for release later this summer.

The 43-year-old actor based his portrayal of Sparrow on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Wood, who plays his father in the eagerly anticipated third instalment.

Movie bosses were initially said to have been worried about Depp's offbeat interpretation of Sparrow, but the risk paid off when his performance earned him an Oscar nomination.

He became the first actor from a Disney film to be recognised by the prestigious movie awards.

The actor's performance as Willy Wonka in 2005's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' was named his third best, while his portrayal as Constable Ichabod Crane in 'Sleepy Hollow' was fourth.
