John Travolta says his mother was the inspiration for his latest role as a woman.
The actor, who had to don a dress and a fat suit to play Edna Turnblad in the remake of 1988 film 'Hairspray', says he had no difficulty accessing his feminine side, because of his close relationship with his mom.
He said: "I grew up with some fantastic women - my mother, my sisters - and they were all performers. So I saw them on Broadway, I saw them in theatre, and I have mental image pictures of women in these kinds of performances.
"I have the best library when it comes to this kind of thing."
The 'Pulp Fiction' actor also claims the role was made easier by his ability to adopt the Baltimore accent he learnt for previous film 'Ladder 49'.
He said: "It helped me because it's slightly feminine."
'Hairspray', which originally starred Ricki Lake, is due for release this summer.
