Queen Elizabeth's visit cements US and UK bonds

The Queen is paying her once thriving colony a visit, and the response to her has been extremely positive and welcoming. Despite the fraying that the Iraq war has caused between the United Kingdom and the United States, her presence and grace reaffirm the undeniable bond and culture and values connection shared. She's also expected to visit Washington, D.C., and attend a state dinner with President Bush before leaving on Tuesday..Gracious Elizabeth II spoke of the April 16 shootings at Virginia Tech, where a gunman killed 32 people and then himself.“My heart goes out to the students, friends and families of those killed and to the many others who have been affected,” the queen said. “On behalf of the people of the United Kingdom, I extend my deepest sympathies at this time of such grief and sorrow.”Afterward, she met with students and faculty from Virginia Tech, including three who were wounded, and with 100-year-old Oliver W. Hill, a civil rights attorney whose litigation helped bring about that 1954 desegregation decision, according to the AP.

I enjoyed 'turning out' yesterday to see Elizabeth on her walk-about at the beautiful Virginia Capitol in Richmond. At my distance from her, I saw mostly her bright pink hat. The weather was decidedly 'British' -- grey, drizzly, and a bit cool, but it didn't bother Elizabeth or the thousands who turned out to see her. She is a very gracious, thoughtful, and well-spoken person.

Her full title is 'Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other Realms and Territories, Queen, Head of the Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith.'

As much as one might detest the very anti-American concepts of monarchy and royalty (and to each country, their own, right?), it's hard not to like this person.

I think it's great she would take the time out of her extremely busy schedule to go and speak at Virgina Tech. I am sure it brought the students, the faculty, the families, and the friends who have been affected by this sad tragedy some more needed comfort.
