The prior two comments don't deserve comment. Just walk our history backwards and, unless you are Native American, you and your forbearers came from somewhere else and many of them were 'illegal' to begin with. So let’s not get religious now. As for this publication, you do Braton a disservice. Why attach a grinning photo of him to this article? The article clearly says that his is concerned and disturbed by the Police conduct. Publishing a photo that says the opposite is journalistically irresponsible and disingenuous. Bratton deserves better. I am from New York and benefit to this day because of the brilliant, fair and responsible police work he did in New York City. His thanks for that was to be fired by Giuliani because he got too much recognition. LA is luck to have him.

I'm very much afraid that the LAPD is going to find out what the Border Patrol already knows: Illegal aliens are a protected species, do not interfere, 'Just walk away.' That is, if you want to stay out of prison.

The United States is being watched the world over as it emerges into a fascist dictatorship that will make Hitler's Germany look like a nursery school.

Rioting police shoot and club and kill with impunity, and white supremacists cheer them on while the rest of the cowards making up the population of that assembly-line murdering sewer called the United States shrugs in indifference, turns on the TV and cheers again when a Nazi police force shoots and kills a 93-year-old woman, plants drugs in the house and the FBI tries to cover it up.

Americans deserve the growing dictatorship. May you all be led to the ovens. You're a nation of cowardly scum.

This was a riot by illegal aliens.
I was born a U.S. citizen.
If I re-enter the U.S. without going through immigration, I go to prison.
Why do these illegal aliens have a 'get out of jail free' card?
This country is no longer a nation of law, its a nation of Selective law enforcement.
These 'protesters' are criminals and should serve prison time for their crime of illegal entry.

We need to FORCE by total embargo that wages in South America go up to ours.

Most are coming here for money.

We need to make the US companies that IMHO are traitors that went to Mexico and put US workers out of work accountable.

We need to put in prison all tratiors to the US that passed NAFTA and GATT and the ones trying to pass the SPP/Americian Union.

We need to get serious about this invasion and cut off ALL goverment aid to any criminal immigrant give them nothing.

Send invaders and their dropped children back to their country.

Ok. I was there, not at the march, but at MacArthur Park where I had to (ordered by my boss) to deliver to three local stores (I drive a food distribution truck). I am a legal immigrant from Europe, and like many legal immigrants who had to pay thousands of dollars to lawyers, wait in line and do things by the book, I do not particulary care for the whole amnesty thing. Aside, Mexicans have proven to me that they can be as ignorant, racist and belligerant as any other race.

BUT....

What I saw yesterday was WAY OUT of hand. Which is the reason why I do not align to much with the anti-immigration crowd neither as they are so bluntly racist and violent, they are willing to overlook CLEAR VIOLATIONS by police in order to satisfy their moronic thirst for blood. I mean, THERE WERE HUNDRED of US citizens at that park yesterday, none which were even involved in the march, and they were being shot at just as much. I saw two mothers and three kids hide BEHIND my truck as rubber bullets were flying by. I saw reporters, regular citizens (Yes, even white skin ones for those of you on the anglo-saxon, white protestant-only train) being pushed, hit....And nobody, not even me, knew really what the hell was going on. People were trying to disperse, but disperse to WHERE?.... People run south just to find another police line, so they run west, and there was more police....It made NO SENSE.

What I DID NOT SEE anywhere neither there nor on ANY OF THE VIDEOS was as single stone, bottle or things being thrown at the cops, which in addition to LAPD's poor record I would say it is probably all made up, or if not, certainly not nearly as bad as they made it out to be.

I can tell you this much, HAD ANY OF THESE SO CALLED PATRIOTS had been there and accidentally gotten shot, watched fellow US citizens and reporters get pushed and hit, NONE would ever stand for it. But then again, so long as the skin is brown, I guess none would really cares.

What are we..in freaking China?.. Police repression ok then?....

Want to see an end to the marches and resulting violence? Here's the two-step process.

STEP ONE - Right now, it is optional for some employers to require employees to fill out an I9 form ... which also requires them to produce documents to back up the information on it. Simply make it mandatory. Then, make it mandatory to run only two pieces of information past our Social Security computers - the name on an I9 form and the SSN. If the name and SSN don't match (or is currently in use by another person in a different job), it becomes a Federal crime (falsifying information on a Federal document). After that, it's merely a matter of enforcing the document law (felony) as opposed to illegal immigration law (misdemeanor).

STEP TWO - When illegal Mexican immigrants are deported, don't just drive them to a border town in Mexico and drop them off. Put them on military cargo planes and fly them by the planeload to Chetumal - the southernmost Mexican town on the border with Belize. That way, to recross the US border, illegals would have to traverse the entire length of Mexico to reach it again ... a task very very few of them would be up for.

Do these two things and, by May Day 2008, I guarantee you'll see only a token march, a token protest, and little if any violence.

BUT ... you'll also see one more thing.

In an earlier post, I mentioned my wife's siblings. We petitioned them to come here the legal way from the Philippines. When they got here, three of them immediately went to work at a local farm while one of them got a job as a maid for a motel chain. My in-laws working at the farm were working alongside immigrants from post-Soviet republics, from Asia, from Kenya, and from Mexico.

One day, the farm owner made a decision ... not out of any racist reason but merely to simplify his accounting. He decided that after a certain date, he would no longer make daily cash payments to workers. Instead, they all had to fill out I9 forms and would receive weekly paychecks (with appropriate taxes, if any, withheld). These were quick payments, too. Checks were available for pickup Saturday morning for work done during the previous Saturday-through-Friday period.

On the date he instituted this policy, the post-Soviets, the Asians, and Kenyans all showed up. But only a tiny fraction of the Mexicans showed up. However, that day, the farm owner asked his remaining employees to spread the word that he needed workers to make up for the missing Mexicans. In less than two days, his fields were full of workers again.

It is a myth to believe that illegal aliens are necessary to our economy. They are merely occupying jobs that legal aliens would fill given the opportunity to fill them. And who is more entitled to fill those jobs ... an immigrant who respects and obeys our laws or an immigrant who openly defies them?

Is it not great how the Internet brings all of the torch-waving racists and bigots out of the wood work? You can read nearly any news story or blog post that mentions immigration or race relations (or any religion that isn't Christianity) and suddenly they appear in the comments, pitchfork in hand, spouting off their stupid opinions as if they have actual value. It must be horrible for them as history moves along and leaves their narrow perceptions and ignorant belief systems in the dust.

Pardon me. Please - go back to your Klan meeting.

Tyler,

OK, let's define racist. How many people here would be willing to walk up to a legal immigrant petitioner from Asia, a legal immigrant petitioner from Africa, and a legal immigrant petitioner from one of the post-Soviet republics, and tell them that it's OK to force them to have their petitions put on hold for twice as long as they'd normally have to wait in order to give illegal immigrants from Mexico first crack at the jobs they'd take? What makes a Mexican more deserving of that job than an Asian? What makes a Mexican more deserving of that job than an African? Who's the REAL racist here ... the person who demands equal treatment of immigrants regardless of their national origin ... or the person who demands preferential treatment of Mexicans at the expense of others?

'Mexican' is starting to take on a negative connotation and is painting a very ugly picture. I predict the word 'Mexican' will soon be politically incorrect and another word will have to take it's place.

Theword,

Actually, that's already happened. Spin doctors in the Republican Party are championing the use of GUEST WORKER in lieu of ILLEGAL MEXICAN IMMIGRANT. It has a feel-good spin to it. To bad those 'guests' are working in jobs that some legal immigrants would give their right arms to have.

I can't resist telling this joke (grin), even if it ends up labeling me as a racist (my Filipino wife and biracial son might disagree, though).

One day, an undocumented Mexican worker walks into a bank and pulls a gun on the teller, demanding all the money in her cash drawer. She complies with the gunman but, unknown to him, presses down on a foot-activated silent alarm that summons the police. The police arrive swiftly and arrest the gunman before he can escape. However, as they're reading him his Miranda rights and telling him he's under arrest for bank robbery, he loudly protests - saying:

'No, you don't understand me at all!!! I wasn't robbing this bank, I was merely making an undocumented withdrawal.

I watched a video in CNN where some protesters threw a pvc pipe and a can of soda at the cops, which so far is the only video I have seen (if there is more, please tell me where I can see it) that shows what the cops claimed was the trigger for the crackdown.

Now, CYNTHIA, I am going to assume that you are NOT from LA, because if you were you would know that MacArthur park is large enough to have one person at one end not knowing what is happening at the other. I was there, but not at the exact location where it 'begun', which is what that video was showing. I was further west. The police wall moved north/west and by the time I was trying to get out they were on top of us. That is why I said 'I guess', also a term commonly used in casual discourse such as comment boards, forums and such.

However, I am glad to know that people like you can simply focus on such arbitrary, superficial crap while completely avoiding the subject matter, something you YOKELS manage to do very well. Now I can use other terms such as xenophobic dumb ass, white-only cheeky fellow or some other term, all which I am sure would probably go over your head. I was just bringing down to your level, YOKEL!!

'We are a nation of immigrants.'

1) Well, let's assume that's true. So this means we are not permitted to be a sovereign nation that gets to decide who may enter and stay here? There are at least four billion persons in the world who would probably reside here if they could. Things could get a little crowded.

2) Well, but it's not really true. George Washington was not an immigrant. Neither was Thomas Jefferson. (I am further not aware of any noted jurist who would claim they were illegal immigrants). We have historically been a nation that turned on and off the immigration spigot to meet our needs. For the past 40 years, conversely, there have been no pauses or reductions in immigration. It is time for a long pause to assimilate those here and to limit the impact on our environment. Moreover, we should give other nationalities and groups to immigrate. For too long, our 'immigration' (much of it composed of illegal aliens who are not legally-speaking, immigrants) has been dominated by Mexico. There should be a 20-year hiatus on latin American immigration. Aren't you hippies supposed to be about 'diversity?'

we are the problemMay 4th, 2007 - 18:58:08

All you people actually completely missed the entire problem.

1. Why aren't their jobs in Mexico?

it's a great country will lot of that resources so why aren't there any jobs or Mexicans in Mexico?

2. You should be blaming American corporations, and Republican capitalists for the problem. Why does everybody think it's a joke when you hear about American corporations and Mexico paying absolutely crap for salaries? It's not a joke they are abusing a country and paying the politicians in that country to make sure they keep the wages low.

3. Why do you think there's a socialist revolution and is starting to take place in South America? Few people should stop watching Fox lose and listening to propaganda and get low reality going, we are the problem!

another example of how the USA has slowly turned into a nazi-like society, where cops (largely uneducated and desire for power) are given too much power. By the way, all nationalities, religiouns and ethnic backgrounds are welcome in this once great country and do have the right to voice their opinions.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE.
