How exactly do you measure relevance? you can dislike the content, but Howard Stern still exerts great influence over many many people.

First, at the very least he has greatly increased the pace of adoption of Satellite radio. He has millions of listeners as evidenced by his ability to impact topics that have nothing to do with the show - for example the current American Idol.

You can call him foul mouth, you can dislike his show but Howard Stern is far from irrelevant.

They all are egotistical maniacs, so in love with their own voices they can't begin to understand intelligence if it hit them in their ugly faces!!!!

It's interesting that you compare O&A to Sanjaya since they're still on terrestrial radio as well as XM, and Sanjaya is still on American Idol.
Where's boner nose? Oh that's right, on the little doggie company Sirius who was ruined by Stern and his ridiculous salary with his 600,000 or so listeners. And according to Stern, he's responsible for Sanjaya still being there....hmm. So what's your point?

J. The DrunkApr 11th, 2007 - 21:15:02

O+A Like Sanjaya are jokes who have Howard Stern to thank for their success (though with clones O+A, I use that word loosely). First, they get kicked off terrestrial for their dopey catholic church sex stunt, then resurface on XM and fail to gain any audience comparative to their listener base on the station they were on. Then sell out the few fans they do have-The O+Gay Army-by going back to free radio to do 3/5 of their show. Stern is a legend in radio, whether you like him or not. He made radio something other than a forum for cartoon-like cookie cutter top 40 disc jockeys and button down narcoleptic political windbags spewing their partys' agenda. O+Gay won't ever influence anyone outside of two jerk-offs who want to have sex in a church, and if the Sirius/XM merger is approved by the Feds, its game over for free radio. Then again, with the FCC silencing any semblence of provocative and controversial talk on the radio and television, free radio is already in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and no one on base.

Stern does have millions of fans. Have you checked the subscription numbers sense he signed up with SIRIUS. Remember, its SIRIUS trying to buy XM, not xm buying sirius. Who thought that would ever happen. Ever sense Howard came to SIRIUS, they've beat xm every quarter on subscription totals. Thats a big deal.....Oh, and Imus is horrible radio. And just the fact that we're talking about satellite radio right now says alot about the Stern effect.

First of all to say that Howard Stern, is Irrelevant is preposterous. Second, to say that he doesn't have millions of listeners, is just absolutely ridiculous. He single handedly put Sirius Satellite on the map. In a little over a year, since Stern came, the subscriptions went from 600,000 to almost 7 million. If that isn't growth then you do not understand economics. Don Imus, is a idiot, and it wouldn't matter if he was off the air tomorrow, no one will miss that want be cowboy. Howard Stern have revolutionized Free FM, and now he will take to the forefront Satellite radio. Four more years to go, and with growth of 6 and a half million people a year, well you do the math. Howard Stern is our generations Larry Flint. He stands for free speech, and rights to voice our opinion as many men, and women have died for in wars. This man should be given a wing of the white house. Howard Stern is truly the king of all media. Now you want to talk about numbers dealing with O&A? Stern, Sharpton, Imus, Limbaugh.... and all the rest, both big and small have one thing in common. They found a niche and exploited it. They made millions doing it because the american public is willing to pay to hear it! Simple as that. If people would quit listening, the advertisers would see it and changes would be made (witness MSNBC pulling Imus, due - not to the outrage of the public over what he said - but to the fact that the advertisers started pulling out.)

Like it or hate it, american opinion is formed, shaped and controlled by advertising.

Imus is not funny, hence he should stay away from attempting racial humor. From him, it just sounds like hateful racism, as there is nothing clever or humorous in his remarks or their delivery.

And Sirius has twice XMs market share. TWICE. Since Stern came to Sirius, they have outsold XM in EVERY SINGLE QUARTER. The gap is closing rapidly, and the position of dominance is why Sirius is effectively taking XM over in the proposed merger.

Stern is doing some of the best radio of his career, and it drives the jealous clones and their sheep-like fans nuts.

What Imus said was a big no-no, it was wrong. I'll bet he knew it as soon as the words flew out of his mouth. But, I used to listen to Imus every morning on the way to work. No, I am not a bigotted racist or empty headed. I know more about Don Imus than, I'll bet, all those talking heads on TV's and radio's these days pause to even question; Who is this guy, anyway? The media feeding-frenzy is portraying itself as just what it is-empty headlines about the same old stuff over and over with no delpth or intelligence at all!
Does anyone know what Imus does other than host radio land? For one he raises millions every year for Tomorrow's Children Hospital. He built a working horse ranch for children with cancer and those afflicted with trauma due to SIDs, ect. This was built from his own money, his wife and he run it. They go with the children, are by there side's every step of the way-they grow food in organic gardens, raise chickens for their eggs (meat is not part of the menu). The kids learn to care for and ride horses, and Imus is with them throughout their entire stay. The purpose is to give these children a sense of 'being a normal kid', enhance self-esteem and dignity.
Anyone who wants to read about it, search for 'Don and Deidre Imus's Ranch', This is only one of the things he does that is honarable.
I believe the whoe thing is hypocrical; look at our comedians, sit coms, movies, other news punits and radio hosts, and Music...come on. Imus is the fall guy for the whole lot of them. He made a mistake, yes. But does not deserve to be hung for it.

Mathew, I just read your little empty statemnt '...One racist to another...' referring to Don Imus and Al Sharpton. I do agree that Al Sharpton is a racist and has ulterior motives for what he does. But c'mon. How many times have you heard people in movies, TV, music, and just plain old everyday folks talking in urban slang like Imus did. But Yes, he is on the radio and he choose the wrong words to say that he thought the Women's Basketball Team were a group of 'tough girls..' In fact, that is what he also said, '...they've got tattoes and everything..they a bunch of tough nappy-headed ho's..' I honestly don't believe he said that with racist thought behind it. He has a bunch of people he banter's back and forth with during the show, comedy mixed with real news and interviews with politicians and writers. I agree, that statement was way over the line, and he should be punished for it. But this feeding frenzy from all media sources is way over the line too. It's about ratings, dude, and people like you are the nodding-bobble-heads they target, Use your own mind.

Imus makes those kids work hard on the ranch and HE reaps the benefits. You said that he is out there with the kids all day. That's BS. He sits in an air-conditioned radio studio and does his show. He then writes off the whole ranch.
Check on Answers

'In March 2005, Wall Street Journal reporter Robert Frank authored an article that was critical of the Ranch and the amount of money that it spends on each child. Accusations of accounting irregularities and personal use of the charity’s assets were investigated by New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid and New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. No charges have been filed in New Mexico. New York closed its investigation on March 24, 2005.'

Check on Freenewmexican:
'Imus and his wife, Deirdre, opened the 4,000-acre ranch between Santa Fe and Las Vegas, N.M., in 1999 as a summer camp for sick children.

But the New York-based charity’s multimillion-dollar annual budget and the Imus family’s use of the ranch’s well-appointed facilities have drawn scrutiny from government officials.

Sam Thompson, spokeswoman for New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid, said Thursday that one concern is “the amount of money that’s being spent to the fairly small portion of children being served.”

The nonprofit ranch spent $2.6 million last year while hosting only about 100 children, The Wall Street Journal reported in a front-page story Thursday . The newspaper said experts consider that an unusually high dollar-tochild ratio for a charity.'

Here's one of the stupid comments of Al Sharpton:

BILL O'REILLY, HOST: Two Duke lacrosse players have been arrested and charged with rape among other violent crimes. They are free on $400,000 bail. As you may know, the students attended a party where a stripper hired by the lacrosse team said she was raped. With us now civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton. Is this a racial issue?

REV. AL SHARPTON, CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST: I think that there are certainly a lot of racial factors. Whether it is directly in the case, we'll see, because some reports said that there was racial language used. But I think that when you look at the racial atmosphere, when you look at the fact that there again were the allegations of racial statements, when you look at a lot of people feeling that they have been treated differently, where this girl has basically had a character charged in the media, there is a lot of racism that's in the air. Having said that, I commend a lot of the blacks and whites who stood vigil and to come together in that community to stand up for this girl. So I think in the midst of this, there is some good.

1987: Sharpton spreads the incendiary Tawana Brawley hoax, insisting heatedly that a 15-year-old black girl was abducted, raped, and smeared with feces by a group of white men. He singles out Steve Pagones, a young prosecutor. Pagones is wholly innocent -- the crime never occurred -- but Sharpton taunts him: 'If we're lying, sue us, so we can . . . prove you did it.' Pagones does sue, and eventually wins a $345,000 verdict for defamation. To this day, Sharpton refuses to recant his unspeakable slander or to apologize for his role in the odious affair.

I don't listen to Don Imus so I'm neither a fan nor a non-fan. He's just one more shock jock in a long succession of others since Joe Pyne's acerbic wit and humor hit the airwaves in the late 1940s. But make no mistake. Imus' fans didn't just go into a corner with their tails between their legs. They probably look at this incident as just a bump in Imus' road and otherwise like Imus who, after all, is a member of the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame and considered by Time Magazine as one of the most influential men in broadcasting.

The really odd thing is the disdain Howard Stern shows for him since, in my opinion, they are cut from the same cloth. Howard Stern had to flee to Sirius satellite radio due to his own questionable on-air demeanor. But he'd better look over his shoulder ... because I suspect that Imus will follow his lead. And as Stern's fans followed him to Sirius, so would Imus' fans.

I would not be surprised if Sirius and/or XM satellite moguls aren't already considering offers to Imus ... and not surprised if Imus didn't already know about them. I predict that Imus will be back on the airwaves before the end of summer. They may just be the non-commercial airwaves of satellite radio ... where there are no sponsors to pull their ads.

All of this brouhaha over a stupid comment. He said 'nappy headed hos'. Did he say 'filthy niggers?'

Blacks need to lighten up and they the cornbread out of their ears. This whole thing is stupid.

Is that actually Howard in that picture? Jesus, that plastic surgery didn't seem to work.

With the C-grade model on Howard's arm, is his transformation into Imus complete?

I remember when Stern was just as big of an a-hole when he worked at WWDC in Washington,D.C. when the Air Florida crash happened and that insensitive moron Stern ,mimicked the miget from Fantasy Island to forget those little facts when he picks on others in the radio industry.
