Warren Beatty’s 'Vain' confession

The Boston Herald reports that Martha's Vineyarder and chanteuse Carly Simon charged $50,000 to reveal her lyrical secret. Warren Beatty - Hollywood, CA © Scott Alan / Photorazzi“Let’s be honest,” the 70-year-old told London’s Express. “That song is about me.”For years speculation over who the bad boy was in Simon’s song, the Herald reports she actually auctioned off the answer years ago to raise $50,000 for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.According to the Herald, NBC's Dick Ebersol put in the winning bid at the 2003 Possible Dreams Auction. "Then he and nine pals went over to Carly’s house where she served up peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, vodka on the rocks and the answer to her deep, dark musical mystery. Carly then swore Ebersol & Co. to secrecy," reports the Herald.The most common belief was that the song was about Mick Jagger, who contributed backup vocals, or James Taylor, Carly's ex husband and fellow Vineyarder.So far, Simon isn't confirming or denying Beatty's claims to "Vain-hood.".

I knew about the auction. It made headlines a few years ago. And the facty that the song is about Warren B>? The first time I heard THAT rumor was in 1975 or 1976. So this really isn't 'news'.
