Heather Mills has defended her decision to wear a fur coat.

It was revealed yesterday (12.03.07) Heather wore a mink coat - made from up to 40 animals - to a wedding in 1989.

She has now excused her actions, saying she only did it because it made feel closer to her mother who had just died.

The former model wrote on her personal website: "The coat belonged to my mother, who had sadly died just a few days earlier and I wore it as it made me feel close to her."

Heather - an ardent animal rights campaigner who branded former PETA supporter Naomi Campbell a "hypocrite" for sporting fur - has no regrets about her decision to wear the coat.

She said: "I am not ashamed I wore it. At the time I was not a vegetarian and I was not an anti-fur campaigner. I was extremely young and not aware of the issues surrounding the fur trade."

The footage sparked outrage from animal rights group Bloodlust and Heather has been receiving hate mail covered in fake blood.

Before Heather split from Sir Paul McCartney last year, she regularly worked for PETA - protesting against Canadian seal culling and the fur trade.

Not surprising. If her father had been a seal hunter I suppose she'd be out there clubbing them.

I don't see anything wrong with her having worn that fur coat 17 years ago before she believed that it was wrong to do so. It belonged to her mother who had just died, if the anti fur folks can't relate to that then they need to get grip on reality.

The anti-fur uber-conservationist types are so quick to point out what they consider to be offensive. I am not pro fur but at the time, her beliefs regarding fur were different than they are now. The anti-folks should be celebrating the fact that her opinions regarding fur have changed for the better instead they can only criticize, which is all they really know how to do.

Ever tried to pet a mink? They're evil! Nothing but claws, teeth and attitude in a soft furry package. They do make nice coats though, very warm...

Many of the best animal rights supporters were once meat eaters or fur wearers because they were unaware of the brutality surrounding it. The difference is that Heather became enlightened and now works to help others see the truth as well. This article is biased by using a headline that totally misconstrues what she was trying to say in 'defending' her actions.

Stay strong Heather!

Why are you sitting here talking about someone that you don't even know, wearing a coat in 1989?

Put down the keyboard and get on with your life.
