Ellen DeGeneres turned in a stellar and sly comedic performance at the Oscars. Another Oscar delight was Robert Downey, Jr., who quipped: "Visual effects: They enable us to see aliens, experience other universes, move in slow-motion, or watch spiders climbing high above the city landscape." (a beat) "For me, just a typical weeknight in the mid-Nineties."
A heartfelt acceptance speech was given by an emotional Forest Whitaker, who earned the best actor award for "The Last King of Scotland," in which the soft-spoken actor played the role of Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin.
Helen Mirren was the Queen of the night, winning best actress for her portrayal in "The Queen" of British monarch Elizabeth II facing ebbing loyalty after the death of Princess Diana.
The shocked Jennifer Hudson won the supporting actress Oscar for "Dreamgirls," and the wonderful Alan Arkin won for supporting actor in "Little Miss Sunshine."
Hudson said: "Oh my God, I have to just take this moment in. I cannot believe this. Look what God can do. I didn't think I was going to win," Hudson said through tears of joy. "If my grandmother was here to see me now. She was my biggest inspiration."
