Russell Crowe has outraged sports fans by getting rid of his rugby team's cheerleaders.
The Oscar-winning actor, who has a 75 per cent stake in Australia's South Sydney Rabbitohs, decided to axe the baton twirling squad of beautiful women because they were making people "uncomfortable".
Crowe said: "We feel they make a lot of people feel uncomfortable. It makes women uncomfortable, and it makes blokes who want to take their son to the matches uncomfortable. The positive response we got, particularly from women like my wife, when they heard this news makes it easier to enjoy the actual game. Everyone sees this as being progressive."
Crowe is married to Danielle Spencer who he has two sons, Tennyson and Charles, with.
However, on of the sacked cheerleaders, Ashleigh Francis, has hit back at the 'Gladiator' star's claims that fans had grown tired of their act.
Francis said: "We were employed by Souths as professional dancers and our role as cheerleaders was simply to add glamour to the sport.
"Children at the games were constantly approaching us and asking us for autographs and photos, and little girls would even ask us if they were old enough to be cheer girls too."
