Britney Spears has sparked fears she is on the verge of a breakdown after shaving her head.
The 25-year-old singer - who is said to be terrified of losing her children in a custody battle with estranged husband Kevin Federline - was seen crying in her limousine before entering Esther's Haircutting Salon in Tarazana, California, on Friday (16.02.07).
After hairdressers refused to shave her head, Britney grabbed a pair of clippers and sheared off her locks herself.
Salon owner Esther Tognozzi said: "I tried to talk her out of it, but she said, 'No, I absolutely want it shaved off now.'
"Afterwards she looked in the mirror and said with tears in her eyes, 'Oh, my God, I shaved it all off. My mom is going to be so upset with me.'
"I asked her if the buzz cut was a symbol of a new beginning and she said, 'Yeah, something like that.' "
An hour later Britney went to the Body and Soul Tattoo parlour and had pink lips etched onto her wrist and a black, pink and white cross on her lower hip.
One onlooker revealed: "She said she was tired of having things plugged into her. She seemed distraught and disturbed, like she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown."
Later that night, troubled Britney was seen at Beverly Hills' Cedars Sinai Medical Center wearing a dark wig.
She went into a private room and was seen by medical staff before leaving an hour later.
Britney checked into Eric Clapton's Crossroads Centre in Antigua rehab clinic last Thursday (15.02.07) following a four-day drinking binge in New York.
But she stayed less than 24 hours before visiting her two sons, Sean Preston, one and five-month-old Jayden James in Malibu.
Last week, Britney's former personal assistant Felicia Culotta revealed family and friends want her to get help.
Felicia posted a letter on website Thatotherblog.com: "There's only so much you can do to help. I cannot convince her to love herself. I cannot save her from herself, nor can I commit her to treatment program against her wishes. I am throwing my hands up and realising I am helpless."
Less than 24 hours after shaving her head, Britney was seen wearing a short blonde wig and chain-smoking at West Hollywood's Mondrian hotel.
Her mother Lynne, who reportedly begged Britney to enter rehab over fears she might lose custody of her sons, has now rushed to Los Angeles to see her daughter.
Britney's locks are for sale on internet auction website eBay. Bidding had reached a staggering $1.1 million last night (18.02.07).

I wish so baldy that i could be a close friend to you. If i were your friend i would call you and say 'I know that you are going through a rough time right now..going through a divorce is tough no matter what kind of loser he may or may not be. I to went through a divorce at an early age. I know that its hard and overwhelming to be a good mom especially when you love your kids so much. Your in a transitionary phase in your life. I think i can understand that your partying is just a way to cope with your despair and loneliness. I get that you probably feel good when you are abusing. Be it food, drugs or sex. I have felt those things and more. Feeling so much pain inside of yourself that you can barely stand yourself...So you shave your head as a way to distance your sexuality from yourself. Being overwhelmed with privelge and responsibilty. I wish so badly that i could heal your hurt. not for anything but for your sanity.If i were you i would seek to remove myself from all things that cause you pain or confusion or that destroy your soul. those things being sex, drugs and bad associations. I would live an underground life if i were you so i could learn to love myself without judgement or scrutiny. I don't idolize celebrities. But I have to hope that Spears will choose to make a good life for herself and for her children, whether she remains a superstar or not.

She said she was tired of having things plugged into her.. so she gets a few tattoos. Poor girl really isn't thinking straight. And if you're trying to keep your kids, behavior like shaving your head doesn't exactly make you seem like the most stable parent. Hope she gets her life straightened out and that her kids can grow up somewhat normally.

Honestly, I wouldn't think it was a big deal at all that she shaved her head - she doesn't look that bad and she wouldn't be the first artist to wear wigs in the industry (since many of them do) as necessary. My concern is more for her mental state of mind with the remarks that were overheard. Her personal expression is no one's business and a tattoo or shaving doesn't signify a breakdown. However, if she was admitted into the center for her state of mind of her own will because she is distressed, I have to ask, what sort of lawyers does she have that she would have to worry about Federline getting custody of the children? He didn't even fight for his previous ones and the motive for wanting Britney's is all too apparent. I think there's something a lot more wrong going on here than a shaved head.

I am hoping Britney's Mom will be able to hold her daughter in her arms like she did when she was a baby and help her to learn to stand on her own again. In your heart you know who you are and where you came from and where you should be RIGHT NOW, not tomorrow.....NOW! i think that people need to leave the woman alone! So wut if she shaved her hair, she has so many things available to her, she can get a wig or a weave or anything. Also, the people that complain about her are the same people who read about her and gawk at her, so dont complain if ur the reason she's in the tabloids. If everyone would just leave the poor girl alone, she wouldn't be having the breakdown that she's having. So what, she shaves her head and gets tattoos...thats a normal thing that people do all the time. Why is it such a big deal that she does it? In my opinion, she needed to shave her head anyways, her hair was nasty from all the dyes anyways!

If Britney would remain calm and think about how many times she was upset with her last hubby for partying more than being a father; she would have the upper hand; I never followed all that news in detail but I gathered that she wanted equal responsibility in bringing up her children. That alone shows that her character leans towards a mature, responsible life and ways.
I guess she knew then that she made a big mistake with this one too. But American culture is hard to get by; when the public and her hubby both want to see the Britney Lolita girl in a school uniform being sexually enticing; when she goes along with this it is also exciting for her at the time but the image that her fans love may not be her true self; maybe part of it, a Fantasia, as we all have but ultimately not that of what she is growing into. She will ultimately find herself out of that if she remains strong and can manage to resist the drugs. I think Britney is more (and different) than what her fans see and she knows it and she is now feeling controlled by everyone, even those fans.
I am not a fan of hers myself but I do think that it is a sign of intelligence that she is presently battling with her own ghosts and in such a symbolic manner. Surely she may regret the tattoos but they will remain memoirs of her growth is she manages to come through this one. There is nothing wrong with her bald head; what's wrong is that people are not able to join the two images of a Britney shaved and the Lolita with long hair, so it's obvious she does not feel herself in the image placed before the public; however she may have deliberately lent to this image herself.

SHE HAS POST PARTUM DEPRESSION. She needs help! I can't imagine the pressure she must feel being a YOUNG new mother, going through a divorce, a custody battle and being the butt of public jokes. There are so many places where she can get help. Many women suffer from this and they don't have to. Brittany this is a good chance for you to bring this to light. You will be okay.
I hope Britney reads your letter Shannon. It made me feel like there's hope because I've been going through my own private Hell and I am just a regular person. Most people don't have any idea about what it's like to be that famous. I've worked around famous people for years and I would never want to be in the position they're in - especially in the world we live in today.
Good luck Britney. I hope you can get whatever you need to make you happy. I would love to see you with that beautiful, sweet smile on your face again.

I have never seen soooo many 'concerned' people with nothing better to do than try and convince some 'celeb' how you 'understand' her problems. Please....What problems???? Divorce? Helloooooo....how many people divorce every year? What, she worried that she will have to split time with the ex AND her nanny now? What 'emotional problems' does this woman have anyway? Does she get up every morning and go to work? Does she have to work 'overtime' in order to pay all the bills and have enough for food? Does she have to find time to clean her house? Who knows why she did it ... and who knows why anyone would CARE why she did it. I'm not a Britney fan, just an observer. And frankly, I'm tempted to go with a theory voiced by a London psychotherapist. The shrink believes that Britney cut her hair as a metaphorical 'flipping-finger' given to all the people who have controlled her life and doted on her fandom. In short, it's her way of telling everyone to go to Hell.
The shrink thinks that this was Britney's goodbye to the world of pop music. Face it - she's a millionaire. And, she needs the glitz and glamor of public life a heckuva lot less than the public (and her promoters) need her. If this theory is true (and it may not be), I expect to see less and less about Britney. She'll probably put all her wealth into Treasury bills, find a quiet corner of the world, change her name and live the quiet life. And, she'll probably only grow back her hair to look like Anne Heche ... perhaps even dye it again ... to keep her anonimity in check.
If this is what she plans to do, more power to her. A lot of stars stay in the biz until their popularity goes completely under - and live the rest of their lives under a shadow (ie., Michael Jackson). If Britney's getting out of the biz, she's doing it at a time when she's still in the limelight. And for a star, getting out while you're 'on top' is the best way to retire.

It is unfortunate when someone is obviously in a lot of pain and I believe Britney Spears is suffering from some very serious emotional issues. The lack of compassion that I have read and seen on television is disheartening. She is a person not just a 'celebrity' that is an easy target for people to judge and make fun of without any concern for her feelings. Her behavior demonstrates a person in need of help and I wonder how many people truly care enough to get her the help she so desperately needs. The tabloids and media are cashing in on Britney's mental breakdown. If she were to admit herself in an inpatient program the tabloids and media would loose their meal ticket. What a way to make a living on other people's misfortunes. If she was one of your friends and you witnessed very erratic behavior what would you do. Think about it would you be laughing and making jokes. I doubt it. I think we should support Britney Spears in getting help, and post as many of our comments regarding this as possible.
It may seem like a great life being a celebrity but there are many disadvantages to fame. Britney has gone through some major life changes mainly having a child. I know woman can relate to how they felt about there bodies after being pregnant. It's tough getting back in shape. Imagine how it would feel having the media commenting nationally on your weight gain.
Compassion, we all need it when times are difficult.

It's not a lack of compassion toward Britney Spears. It's a lack of EXCLUSIVE compassion toward Britney Spears. I can think of a billion or so people on this Earth who have a much tougher life than Britney. Why should I (or anyone else) care if she agonizes over tabloid reports that she's gained weight when, in another part of the world, some people worry whether they'll get enough rice to keep them alive for one more day ... only to experience the same worry the next day, and on and on?
I don't read tabloids because, frankly, I couldn't care less about how one millionaire is 'coping' with a personal disaster when persons not so economically fortunate experience their own disasters (some far worse). Where is it dictated that those who entertain us (and are paid well to do so) are deserving of any more sympathy than anyone else? Why do stories like this end up on page one while stories about famine in Kenya end up on page seventeen?
Money cannot buy happiness. But having a lot of money gives people control over their time. And it's in TIME that people can exercise great power over their own lives. President Truman once said, 'If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.' And I think it's fair to say that someone with Britney's wealth would have a much easier time finding the kitchen door than someone less wealthy. She only has to open that door, walk out, and slam it good and hard behind her.
