Nicolas Cage says all actors have sold their souls for fame.
Cage - who stars as Johnny Blaze, a stunt motorcyclist who sells his soul to the devil to save his step-father in new comic book movie 'Ghost Rider' - can empathise with the character because he has made a similar choice.
He said: "I can empathise with him. After all, as an actor, every time I go before a camera for other people's entertainment, aren't I, in effect, selling my own soul?"
The 43-year-old was adamant his character couldn't be someone who courted the devil so he begged producers to make him a timid animal-lover instead.
He explained: "It was very important to me that he wasn't a chain-smoking, alcoholic bad ass, because he would be inviting the devil in. I thought if you were really afraid the devil was coming to get you, you would do everything to push him away.
"So I said to the director, 'He doesn't drink alcohol, he listens to Karen Carpenter and he likes chimpanzees - chimpanzees that practice karate!'"
