This is a great year for Latin talent behind and in front of the camera. One of the most promising and well-received is "Ugly Betty" star, America Ferrera, who has been praised in the US House of Representatives for her Golden Globe Award win and work raising the profile of Latinos.
"Ugly Betty" is played by a beautiful girl who is the youngest of six. The 22-year-old America Ferrera starred in movies like "Real Women Have Curves" and "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants." But every Thursday at 8 p.m. on ABC, America shows up in on television in her god-awful wig, braces, glasses and wardrobe as Betty.
Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis from California took to the floor of the US House of Representatives on Wednesday to publicly salute the star. Solis said, "Madame Speaker, I rise today to congratulate American Ferrera for winning the Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy for her work in ABC show Ugly Betty.
The El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, California grad and current USC student is changing the face of American prime-time television. "I commend America and everyone involved in Ugly Betty for helping to break down stereotypes and provide a role model for young Latinas," said Solis.
