Helen Mirren Queen of the Globes

Jan 16, 2007, 12:20 GMT

Dame Helen Mirren was crowned queen of the Golden Globes last night (15.01.07).

The veteran British star received Best Actress awards for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in royal drama 'The Queen' and for her eponymous role in the TV mini-series 'Elizabeth I'.

Stephen Frears' hit movie which focuses on the British Royal Family in the wake of the death of Princess Diana in 1997 also won Best Screenplay.

Fellow British star, Sacha Baron Cohen was named Best Actor in a Film Musical or Comedy for his portrayal of a spoof Kazakhstan journalist in 'Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan'.

The comic uncharacteristically picked up the award as himself, and not as his controversial character.

However, he still managed to raise a few laughs, referring to a scene in the movie when he wrestled naked with his co-star Ken Davitian.

He said: "When I was in that scene, and I stared down and I saw your two wrinkled golden globes on my chin I thought to myself, 'I better win a bloody award for this.'"

The evening also saw Justin Timberlake get his own back on Prince, who slated the 'SexyBack' singer at an Emmy Awards after-show party last year.

Timberlake was there to present Prince with the award for Best Original Song, for his hit 'The Song of the Heart' from animation 'Happy Feet'.

However, the 'Purple Rain' singer failed to appear to collect his prize and Timberlake took it upon himself to accept the award on his behalf by stooping down to emulating the star's petit height.

He said, "Well I guess Prince couldn't be here", then crouched down and continued, "I'd like to accept this award on his behalf."

Other winners included Forest Whitaker, who struggled to hold back tears as he collected his gong for Best Actor in a Film Drama for his role as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in 'The Last King of Scotland', 'Babel' - starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett - won Best Film in the drama category and Meryl Streep received a nod for her performance in 'The Devil Wears Prada'.
