Mental Russell Brand
Jan 14, 2007, 12:10 GMT
Russell Brand insists he is mentally ill.
The 'Big Brother's Big Mouth' presenter - famed for his outrageous behaviour - insists he has to be mentally unbalanced to cope with the pressures of fame.
He said: "Should you wish to succeed in show business you have to be dogged, resolute and possibly mentally ill."
The former heroin addict has endured many setbacks in his career but says his strong personality always helped him bounce back.
He said: "You may have to endure poverty, hardship and hatred, but you can fulfil your dreams if you're utterly determined."
Although he is a successful TV and radio presenter, Russell considers stand-up comedy his biggest talent.
He said: "My salvation has been stand-up. It gives you autonomy instead of nervously waiting for the phone to ring. It got me used to being in front of an audience. I was rubbish at first, then arrogant, then drunk, then absolutely awful. I was a spectacular failure."

Russell did not say you had to be mentally ill to be successful, he said it was a possibility. Some of his behaviour in the past was clearly quite odd - he used to self harm on stage and throw mutilated dead animals at the audience. However, his honesty, good humour and heroic efforts to stay free of alcohol and drugs are an example to anyone seeking to overcome their demons. Long may he bring his warmth and charm to our screens and airwaves.
