Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz have confirmed what everyone knew for over a week, their relationship is over.

The couple - who have been dating since 2003 - issued a joint statement to confirm the split on Thursday (11.01.07).

The statement said: "It has always been our preference not to comment on the status of our relationship but, out of respect for the time we've spent together, we feel compelled to do so now, in light of recent speculation and the number of inaccurate stories that are being reported by the media.

"We have, in fact, ended our romantic relationship, and have done so mutually and as friends, with continued love and respect for one another."

Rumours of the couple's separation have been rife for weeks, but both refused to comment until now.

The pair, who were always kept details of their relationship private, met at the 2003 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.

Justin dated Britney Spears, actress-and-singer Alyssa Milano and singer Veronica Finn before finding love with Cameron. He is rumoured to have spent Christmas with Veronica and his family. Justin has also recently been linked with Scarlett Johansson.

Cameron previously had a four-year relationship with Jared Leto and also romanced Matt Dillon.

Justin and Cameron star in new animated sequel 'Shrek The Third', which is due to be released in the spring.
