British pop star makes millions with private gig in Russia

London - British pop singer George Michael made 1.5 million pounds (2.9 million dollars) with a New Year's Eve performance at a Russian billionaire's party outside Moscow, his spokeswoman said Tuesday. The unnamed businessman paid for Michael, former singer of the pop group Wham!, to entertain his 300 guests with an hour-long concert. The lavish party took place on his private estate 20 miles outside Moscow, the star's spokeswoman said. The sum is believed to make Michael, 43, the highest paid entertainer in modern Russian history. He was flown out to the billionaire's mansion with his 20-strong entourage of band and backing singers.
