Angelina Jolie's refugee Christmas

Dec 27, 2006, 12:10 GMT

Angelina Jolie spent Christmas Day visiting refugees in Costa Rica.

The 'Tomb Raider' actress jetted into the country on Monday (25.12.06) to begin a visit as part of her work as a UN Goodwill Ambassador.

As she met with a number of refugees, Angelina took the opportunity to speak out about the growing problems in the country.

It is estimated that there are around 11,500 refugees in Costa Rica, most of who arrived after fleeing Colombia to escape the conflict between leftist guerrillas, soldiers and paramilitary forces.

Angelina, whose lover is Brad Pitt, said: "The conflict in Colombia is the greatest humanitarian tragedy in the Western Hemisphere, but it receives very little international attention.

"My Christmas message to Colombian refugees and to the millions of displaced people in Colombia is that the world has not totally forgotten them."

I really think it's great that her & Brad spent the Holiday visiting the less fortunate, but I have a question. Where were all the celebrities when there were over 200 people left homeless on Christmas day? Ware where they when people in their on supposed 'home country' are down on there luck and need help or just a simple smile and a word of encouragement? If they love these 3rd world people so much why don't they just go live in their countries and become a citizen? It's great that celebrities want to do charity work, and contributing to 3rd world country's that don't even care or know that they are 3rd world and will probably never be any thing but 3rd world because that is the only thing they know or care to know, why the celebrities start in their own back yard before they go off trying to save the world. You have to start somewhere, the critics might say, well I say start in the country that made you who you are. Brad & Angelina splurged in other country's leaving large tips & asking for no special treatment why could they not give it back to the people that gave it to them, the American people? Or if your going to help the world try plunking money in to research to cure genetic diseases, or other epidemic's in our own homes as well as the rest of the world. The United States & it's celebrities have spent more that enough time & money trying to safe the rest of the world, well I am to the mind of let's focus on our own people trying to make life for them more comfortable for those blowing their time, efforts & money on people who don't even care that they exist! This statement goes for every one in this country who are more worried about other country's people than our own, we need to worry about ourselves a little bit more otherwise we will continue to have the unemployment rate, and homeless population soar beyond belief. We will continue to have children being shot in school, little girls thinking they have to have plastic surgery to appease their fellow students so they can ware cloths that are way to old for them obtain a boyfriend and have children of their own before they even get out of high school, because all they have for role models are women like Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan & Britney Spears. Even Hillary Duff & one of the Olson twins fall under that same category because they are so worried about their looks that they look anorexic. Please people do not take this as me being rude or cynical I am just a true believer that we need to start looking inward instead of being concerned about what is outward.

This is so true, we have children right here in America & 'next door' per say, with no gifts to open & no Christmas dinner on the table. Sad to say but as we watched our children play with new gidgit gadgets on X-mas, some children woke not even knowing what the day was. Terrible!!!

I agree, we have children who need help in our own country. The American people helped these stars achieve their fame, why can't they find people to help in the USA !!!!!!!! They would not have to travel far!!!!!!!!!

I see nothing wrong with Brad and Angelina helping children in third world countries. Your comments just reflect how selfish 'we' are here in the US. We always want everything for ourselves and it is just 'us' and forget 'them'. I strongly support what Brad and Angie are doing. Putting their money where it is needed the most.

I'm glad that angelina jolie and brad pitt are taking action and actually doing something rather than sitting back in their luxury mansions and throwing some money at the 3rd world problems. After all, it's a lot harder to give when you have to GIVE UP some of your own confort and well bein isn't it? Anyway I also agree that there are a lot of problems in America that also require attention. But at the same time, this is evidence that the work of Angelina and Brad in the 3rd world are raising concerns and interests about the well being of people everywhere which I see as a very very positive thing.

yeah but couldn't they have stayed home for Christmas, helped out the less fortunate in their hometown AND then go to Costa Rica after the New Year?

Well, nevertheless God Bless Brangelina. They have a beautiful heart!
