US soul singer James Brown dies aged 73

So Another legend passes on.
James Brown is definitely one of the great musical influences of the last century. No one can claim inventing a particular genre as styles are evolved rather than created. He did have a role in the development of funk which led to hip hop.
He was an entertainer which requires a lot of belief in one self which probably explains some of the things he said. His dependence upon drugs and alcohol is not uncommon in creative people. He ought not be judged by that.
Hopefully he went to whatever there is knowing that he made a difference. I am certain there have been and will be those who listen to his music saying 'I want to do that'. This is an important part of one's legacy, the ability to pass the torch on.

Ray Charles, at 73 is dead. He won an enormous audience in the 1950s, '60s and beyond by blurring the distinctions among rhythm and blues, jazz, and blues, bringing elements of all of those types of music into his performances. He did so at a time when the term 'race records' intimated that certain recordings by black artists were suited only for black listeners, and most black musicians faced considerable resistance to their forays toward the largely white mainstream.
Brown's egalitarian approach developed during his childhood, as he learned gospel, classical, boogie-woogie, jazz and blues music, and it marked his early professional career: His breakthrough recording, 'Please, Please, Please' with his Famous Flames included blues, big-band arrangements. His small-combo jazz- albums are among his most compelling work, and yet consider his hits: 'Night Train' and 'I Feel Good.' Describe those records as blues or R&B, and you wouldn't be wrong; thus, Brown made it clear that insisting upon segregation, by race or musical genre, in his case was folly.

But James Brown was more than popular and open-minded. At his best, he was about as deep as you can get into music from the soul. His greatest work was infused with the emotional intensity of the blues and the passion of gospel music, creating at times music so raw, so explicit in its expression that it's almost unbearable to listen to. On his version of 'Try Me', a song that's a cry Brown sounds as if he's on the verge of tears. Though it's dolled up with heavy Jazz and quartet backup of gospel singers, it's a performance that transcends all categorization save one: It is a perfect example of the power of art to communicate one man's emotions to others.

We will miss the Godfather of Soul.
