Ricky Gervais refused to follow the script while filming his Hollywood debut.
The comedian was invited by showbiz friend Ben Stiller - who guest-starred on Ricky's BBC comedy series 'Extras' - to play the eccentric museum boss in new family film 'A Night At The Museum' but insisted on making his lines up as he went along.
Director Shawn Levy told BANG showbiz: "Ricky came to me before he was due to shoot his scenes and said, 'You know what. I think this will work better with no script.'
"Two of his scenes with Ben are entirely improvised. They just bounced off each other."
But Ben and the British comedian - who rocked to fame in his hit TV series 'The Office' - couldn't stop making each other laugh.
Ricky confessed: "We were so unprofessional. We kept just cracking each other up over and over again."
