Sometimes an audience gets misjudged by what they will respond to favorably, and director Oliver Stone recently this found out the hard way with a badly timed serial killer joke in all places: England.
Americans are not doing too well abroad these days, with Sharon Stone upsetting Norwegians, that whole Iraq business, and now Hollywood director Oliver Stone shocking a usually thick skinned audience at the British Comedy Awards in London by joking about the recent murders of five prostitutes.
The Suffolk killings have dominated headlines this week and Stone's ill-timed comment, first reported on the Drudge report, was met with horror by the celebrity audience including Sacha Baron Cohen and Charlotte Church.
When Stone presented the Best Comedy Film prize to Wallace And Gromit creator Nick Park, he remarked, "It's great to be back in England. I feel like Jack The Ripper days are back. Nothing ever changes here."
Stone, upon realizing his joke was not appreciated, allegedly said, "You're a lovely crowd."
