Older Talkback

Kirk Douglas can say this because he comes from a generation that understood what is important in life. These are people who suffered though the Great Depression, fought in the second world war or had loved ones that did. The word sacrifice had meaning to them.
The generations that followed have, for the most part, no idea of what that means. My generation, growing up in the 60's and 70's thought we could change the world. As we got older we became more concerned about our personal 'issues' and comforts and became worse than what we accused our parents of. Our children are even more removed from a world where things were appreciated, not taken for granted.
Changing the world involves sacrifice. It means remembering that each of us has responsibility for what happens in the world. During the second world war goods were rationed and with some grumbling people went along with it. During the depression those who had often shared with those who didn't. Today sacrifice is for someone else to make.
We blame the government, the rich, corporations and the various institutions for the problems of the world. Yet who buys the cars, the electronics. Who has forgotten basic human values. The world can only be saved if we look inside of ourselves and see what sacrifices in time and lifestyle we need to make.
