The Canadian-born actress - who plays alluring convict Kate in hit US TV series 'Lost' - claims she only started going to film auditions to rid herself of her insecurities.
She told America's Star magazine: "For ages I didn't want to be noticed. Then I decided to assert myself by going to auditions."
Despite achieving massive success, Evangeline - who is engaged to her 'Lost' co-star Dominic Monaghan - hates being famous.
She explained: "I've struggled with fame. I don't like it and I've never wanted it. It's an ugly world, with the pressures, the lack of privacy and the lack of anonymity. It's something I've been grappling with and I don't yet know whether to embrace it, ignore it or reject it."
The 26-year-old star is planning on becoming a writer when her acting career comes to an end, so she can enjoy a quieter life.
She said: "If I could act and make the income I make and be anonymous, I would never want to leave the job, but if I have my way in this life, after 'Lost' is over, I would become a writer. Writing has been one of the most powerful influences in my life and it always has been since I was a little girl."
