Courtney Love wept with joy after a Los Angeles judge terminated her probation yesterday (12.12.06).

Superior Court Judge Rand Rubin also dismissed three misdemeanour cases, including two drug related charges, due to her successful completion of a rehabilitation programme.

Love burst into tears saying: "Thank you for not taking me into custody.

"Thank you for giving me an opportunity. You've been a good, fair judge. Sorry for crying."

Judge Rubin told her: "Early on in this case Ms. Love, I think you came very close to coming into custody.

"I think you've done very well. You've shown to me you are interested in a much less destructive lifestyle.

"I would like to cautiously wish you the best in this matter."

Love hugged and kissed her attorney Howard Weitzman and manager Peter Asher, and vowed to remain sober and continue her therapy.

She added: "Out of my own free will!"

The rocker, the widow of the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, was sentenced in September 2005 to 180 days at a drug treatment facility for three violations of her probation — one for illegal possession of painkillers, one for being under the influence of a controlled substance in public and another for assault and battery.

In February 2005, Love had pleaded guilty to one count of illegal possession of a narcotic, the painkiller Oxycontin, with a fictitious prescription.

She also pleaded no contest to one count of assault with a deadly weapon likely to cause great bodily injury which referred to her arrest in April 2004 for entering the house of her ex-boyfriend and assaulting a woman, Kristin King, who was sleeping on the couch.

During her February 2005 court appearance, Love also settled her other outstanding criminal case by pleading guilty to her drug possession arrest which dated back to October 2003.

Love's plea meant that if she complied with the terms and conditions of her court ordered treatment in an 18 month period, it could be dismissed.

The singer was sentenced to three years probation, ordered to complete one year of anger management counselling, one year of a drug treatment programme, 100 hours of community service, random drug testing and a $1,000 fine.

She was also required to attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings three times a week.

These terms have now all been dismissed.
