my wife is chinese and they are the most intergrated and successful ethnic group in the USA. Just because they never complain and just get on with life people like this think they can make fun out of them, it'd racist and not acceptable. The Chinese should be more vocal against such abhorant cheap jibes. I may as well have a go at her for being fat and ugly - don't think she would like that about as much as my wife was unimpressed by her racist rubbish.
i think everybody needs to lighten up--i saw the show and i think it was obvious that rosie was only joking around---one my closest friends was asian and he wasnt offended at all--learn to take a joke.
How typical - it's meant to be funny and it wasn't meant to be racist at all.
Meanwhile, she's hypersensitive when she accused Ripa of gay-bashing when it's known that Ripa is a clean-freak (referring to her comment to Aiken about not knowing where his hand had been after he put his hand over her mouth during a show). Obviously she couldn't grasp Kelly Ripa's sense of humour. Hypocrite!
OH NO... IT'S MEDIA 'CAREER SUICIDE' -- THAT'S 'SELL OUT'. you shouldn't say something on National TV. It's too embarrassing. Rosie better watch out of job fire from ABC company.
Get a grip.... she was talking about media (not the Chinese) getting caught up in something that isnt news worthy, this article is case in point. I am sure if she could speak Chinese she would of used the correct words. She is a comic for crying out loud... America GET A SENSE OF HUMOUR!
Jeeez... what a cow... remember the time she was all over Tom Selleck for his membership in the NRA, and she did WalMart commercials that sold guns... what a hypocrite... this is just another attempt by a pathetic out of the limelight star grasping at attention... they should send her to work in a Chinese coal mine...
now, i dont know if you 'lighten up' commentors are chinese or asian american, but i am. 'get over it?' i bet you guys support michael richards as well. i had to listen to this crap all through my school years, including college. this should most definately not be tolerated by any asian americans, and action needs to be taken upon this 'comedian.' no one finds her funny anyway. dear barbara walters, get rid of this racist pig! this kind of behavior should not be on air waves at all!
Well, if that was meant to be a joke, it really wasn't funny enough. It just didn't do its job at either pissing off all Asians or make anyone laugh. It also seems random that she'd use China as an example—perhaps it was easy? I am Chinese and I am not really offended enough to think much of it. It was a lame joke, after all.
Homosexuals need to get over themselves and get a sense of humor!
And then her agent says, 'I certainly hope that one day they will be able to grasp her humor.' Like Asians are to stupid to grasp it now.
I can't believe that people still even care what Rosie has to say. She reminds me of that person we all have at our jobs that makes fun of people but can't take it. I think the view should send her packing before she really says something stupid....oh yeah she's already done that.
Is it funny when you are a 6-year old Asian kid on the playground and all the other white kids are dancing around you saying 'ching chong ching chong'?
What's worst than a racist is one that doesn't re
What gets me is that this is the same PC minded, thin skinned Rosie who was so offended by Kelly Ripa's statement. Who the %%#$$@ does she think she is. If this was a big media person on the right, he or she would have fired from the show.
What a classic line 'can't you take a joke' this is what every racist I knew always said when they were confronted with their comments.
i'm chinese and i'm totally cool with this, as long as it's okay for me to call o'donnell a fat, ugly dyke.
Just trying to be funny here.
People need to realize that even when they say 'ching chong' as a joke, it echoes every racist remark Asian-Americans have ever heard. I remember when I was a kid in third grade, and other kids would say that about not only me but my mother and father. Although I don't think Rosie meant to be racist, it's unfortunate that she doesn't realize the comments are in themselves hurtful. Without an apology forthcoming, I think it's well within reason for Asian-Americans to condemn her as well as the show. These words, like all other racial epithets, only reinforce negative stereotypes, and it's appalling that a TV personality would be allowed to voice them on public broadcasts.
I don't think Rosie was trying to make fun of Chinese people. She, as part of a larger joke, tried to imitate Chinese, and that's the best she could do. I doubt most other people here could do much better.
It certainly wasn't the point of her joke. She wasn't trying to get laughs from the 'ching chong' bit. The punchline was the 'Danny DeVito' bit in English at the end.
first of all, stop calling her a comedian. she is anything but. a true comedian would have told an actual joke rather than perform a poor interpretation of the chinese language. that was her joke: making fun of the chinese language.
and for someone so hypersenstive about kelly ripa's action, for her to tell the asian community to 'lighten up' is beyond hypocritical. if you're actions have insulted someone, whether you deny the cruel intentions or not, then the most sensitive response would be to apologize. which is the same that she expected of kelly ripa.
her 'joke' was awful, her inability to recognize her insensitivity is offensive.
I work P/T weekends (for past 3 yrs) as a Night Auditor in a hotel in Philly and we mostly have wedding guests staying on during weekends. We have hosted guests of pretty much all ethnic groups, mostly whites (anglo, irish, italian, etc. ), some blacks, some asians, some hispanic etc. I was born in India and tho not a Muslim (born Hindu but atheist) I get taunted with Osama/terrorist jokes all the time. Our hotel hosted the worst group of all - an Asian American group mostly all Chinese at our hotel - just this weekend Dec 9th. While I was just doing my front-desk duties these Chinese made racist terrorist and anti-muslim jokes, for no reason, stole from the hotel store and pretty much destroyed some rooms in the hotel. The chinese who are ranting/raving here should look in your own hearts. I am personally of the opinion that Chinese are the most racist (just go to China) and deserve to made fun of.
I heard on the news this morning driving to work. I'm a Asian from Canada and I thought it is was offensive. I agree with one of the previous comments that Asians do not complain as much about racism, but sometimes it can go too far. I understand if this was in a night Comedy club however, this show is on day time t.v.. I feel that Rosie's joke was ignorant.
Lost in all this is the fact that 'ching-chong' is also used as a derogatory term used to identify Chinese and other Asians.
My brother was involved in a hate-crime assault. He was stabbed and beaten by three men as they repeatedly called him a 'ching-chong peice of ...'
Well, we certainly know how uptight Asians are. Rosie's right ... those people need to get a sense of humor. I poke fun of black people all the time. They don't seem to mind. Those people know a good laugh.
Should Rosie apologize? If she were smart she would. So I guess then she shouldn't.
Look everybody, I'm a comedian and therefore I have the right to poke fun of ethnic minorities! Well well, shall we see how far Michael Richards carrier can go after his little 'n' word rant... yeah, really funny Mr. so called Comedian.
White people don't realize the extent of Rosie's actions because they have never been racially discriminated against to the level that other racial minorities had to go through in this country. You think it's funny because you don't know how it feels to be a grown adult and have little kids on the street squinting their eyes and saying ching chung ching chung to you just because you look different.
K. Hom, just because making fun of a certain race without getting negative reactions doesn't give you the right to do so in the first place. That's like saying I'm kicking you in the nuts and since you didn't seem to mind, I'll just help myself and keep kicking... do you still mind? I don't think so.
Don't tell Asians to loosen up. Rosie you're a ugly fat flaming bitch... oh loosen up, it was only a joke.
rosie is hypocritical, racist, arrogant and plain impossible to take seriously. she is super sensitive when it comes to gays and lesbias but hyper insensitive about anyone else. wake up rosie. you are not the great humanitarian you are always proposing to be.
Mark. I was being ironical. Read it again.
This is poor reporting even for M&C.
Where did you get the information that Rosie thinks Asians should get over themselves?
I haven't seen that reported anywhere. Maybe it's your interpretation of what Rosie thinks... hardly journalism.
As far as Rosie is concerned, she can joke all she wants - but when others joke about fat people or gay people, she needs to shut her mouth and take it as well. There's no two ways about it; if you're gonna dish it, you'd better be able to take it too.
If Asian Americans need to lighten up and learn to take a joke, shouldn't the same be said to blacks, homosexuals, and Jews?
Rosie O'Donnell lost the right to tell anyone to get over themselves and to lighten up when she ripped into Kelly Ripa. I don't know what happened to that woman, I used to LOVE her, now she's turned into an angry, ugly lesbian, who is giving all lesbians a bad name. I am actually missing Star Jones and I loathe that woman.
'She tried to imitate Chinese.'
Good try, but Chinese people really don't speak like this...
Yes, Asian-Americans need to lighten up. So does Rosie, as a lesbian. So does everyone else in this hypersensitive country.
I'm sorry you got made fun of for being Asian but, guess what, it's just human nature for kids (and adults) to be jerks like that. I got made fun of for being Italian by the WASPS at my school. People even threw spaghetti sauce on my parents' front door when we moved into our all-WASP neighborhood right before I was born. You don't see me out protesting the Sopranos because of it.
I got shoved into lockers alot in High School after I came out as gay, too. Such is life. Brush yourself off and move on.
Seriously, I would rather put up with anti-Italian taunts (not that anti-Italian sentiment is that common anymore) or anti-gay taunts than live in a country where no one can say anything for fear of offending some hypersensitive minority.
Ok, I understand that it was a joke, but that doesn't make it a good one. And why is this so surprising? If that had been a black joke, people still would have gotten ticked and rightly so.
I may not be Asian American but I have Asian American relatives including my darling cousin who got her head cracked open because some kids thought it'd be funny to tie her up with duct tape and make her stand on a moving bus! Not to mention every other racist thing they've done against her.
But yeah, point being, she ticked off a comunity with a race joke, that was bad, she should apologize, we move on.
For those of you, who are not offended, wait until someone mocks you like that and you’ll probably be the first to complain too. We all understand that she’s a washed up, not funny individual who was picked to be on the view because of budget cuts. Maybe Rosie and Michael Richards should team up and share their racist remarks with each other because WE don’t want to hear it.
Lighten up? why don't you tell that to all the blacks and gays and jews when you make fun of them. why is it okay for Rosie to make fun of asians? I was born in this country and grew up in NYC and was made fun of almost everyday growing, hearing ching chong, etc. I find this highly offensive and Rosie is a hypocrite. I used to like her but not I am boycotting her and Barbara Walters and so is all my asian american friends. Barbara's boycotting Mel Gibson films because he said anti semetic remarks while he was drunk. How about the anti asian remarks Rosie made while she was sober. Shame on Barbara and Rosie. I say all asians stick together and boycott them!
Marc,
You seem clueless. So, if I put my hand on your mouth, don't be indignant but suck on one of my delectable fingers. Shoot, if i walk around with limp wrist, i hope my homo brother doesn't call me homophobe? When a staight boy calls me 'fag,' why should i be upset 'cause my fag brothers call me fag all the time! Why can't I call a black person 'nigger' when they call each other 'nigger.' Marc, get your head out of your anal orifice and get some fresh air. Ching chong, ching chong, it's only gibberish, why all the pcness...'cause my chink brothers are way too sensitive. I only wish Rosie had a chinaman's hat on and made her eyes really slanty, then it no one would've mistaken it for a true genuine comedy.
I work P/T weekends (for past 3 yrs) as a Night Auditor in a hotel in Atlanta and we mostly have wedding guests staying on during weekends. We have hosted guests of pretty much all ethnic groups, mostly whites (anglo, irish, italian, etc. ), some blacks, some asians, some hispanic etc. I was born in China and tho not a Buddhist (born Confucist but atheist) I get taunted with Chink/Gook jokes all the time. Our hotel hosted the worst group of all - an Hindi mostly all Indians from India at our hotel - just this weekend Dec 9th. While I was just doing my front-desk duties these Indians made racist terrorist and anti-Chinese jokes, for no reason, stole from the hotel store and pretty much destroyed some rooms in the hotel. The Indians who are ranting/raving here should look in your own hearts. I am personally of the opinion that Indians are the mos
So if I made a mockery of a lesbian's lifestyle, but then labeled it as a 'joke' or my 'sense of humor', would that be okay? Where was Rosie's 'lightened up' attitude when it came to Kelly Rippa's completely innocent comment about not wanting someone's hand over her mouth? Rosie is the last person to be telling how others should feel when she herself has overblown an incident that in no way had any underlying negative intentions.
The most insulting part of all this is Rosie is not apologetic at all. She's accusing us of being too sensitive! She's the same as Kramer, but he was smart enough to apologize. I hope her kids get teased for having two mothers.
Rosie might not have wanted to insult or degrade Asians on purpose but what she did, mocking the Chinese language, resembled the action of those who do. Most Asians growing up in this country could recall school playground taunts by Caucasian bullies going 'ching chong, ching chong...', sometimes with their fingers stretching out their eyes, narrowing them to further the affects of Asian mocking.
If someone had said 'Danny De Vito made news even in the gay press. The announcer on a gay radio station this morning said....' then proceeded to imitate the effeminate voice of a gay man...I'd bet Rosie would be up in arms, claiming gay bashing. Look at the way she criticized Kelly Ripa for having objected to Clay Aiken putting his hand on her (Kelly's) mouth to prevent her from speaking.
The best thing for Rosie to do would be to go on the View and said she was sorry she offended Asians by her mimicking last Thursday. That she did not want to offend anyone and she realizes now such an action, while may be innocent on her part, could be hurtful to people and she would not do it again. Come clean, Rosie...
Rosie needs to apologize for her unintentional racism. I believe her when she says she comes in peace. However, as a lesbian she must know what it feels like to be ridiculed. I am asian... and hearing that impression using those words is demeaning.
It is not funny. We need to eliminate these words from our mouths. The 'N' word needs to stop being used also. Asians are not being sensitive, we're being reactive.
Here are pigs discussing their own kind:
'Oink oink, Rosie O'Donnell, oink oink, oink, oink, The View. SNORT!'
OK, onto more serious comments:
For those of you who say 'lighten up' or as Piggy O'Donnell's rep, Cindi (Ham)Berger puts it, 'they can't grasp her humor,' let me tell you to GROW UP.
I've noticed that some of you here have mentioned that you don't get offended at Italian jokes even though you're Italian. But what about the Italians who ARE offended? The fact is that we can't assume that everyone is going to be desensitized when it comes to ethnic humor.
And the sad fact is that Asians, unlike white ethnic minorities in the U.S., are visible minorities. We are still ignored at best, and at worst, bullied, harrassed, and sometimes even killed on account of our race (e.g., the murder of Vincent Chin). According to a study made in 1990 on race perceptions, roughly 70% of white Americans still have a somewhat or very negative view of Asians and Asian-Americans, despite the fact that they supposedly admire Asians for their 'family values' and respect for education.
In effect, we Asian-Americans have not become as desensitized to ethnic humor as we'd like to because we are still dealing with racism with on occasional, and sometimes even frequent basis. Until we get no longer get passed over for promotion, get asked 'Where are you REALLY from,' the phrase 'ching chong' is going to continue to be a sore point with us.
All of you idiots out there that think Rosie was not being offensive need to have your heads examined.
Bottom line is this, even in CHINA people DO NOT speak that way. In the US, Asian Americans grew up with that crap. It IS offensive, friggin apologize already and move on.
I for one am boycotting ALL ABC programs from my house and I am persuading all of my friends to do the same.
BOYCOTT ABC!!!
My blood boils every time I read something about her. The obnoxious pig brings Tom Selleck on just so she can bash him and the NRA and then has her own body guards carry guns. Real Ones. With Bullets. What the hell do you need those for Fat n' Rosie? Hypocrite.
She considers Kelly Ripa's taking that elf, Clay Aiken's, hand off her mouth an unforgivable personal statement of homophobia. Yet the hilarious comedian she is thinks other people have a problem when she takes lightly an entire culture's heritage. Why should she apologize? She an 'openly homosexual woman' so she can do what she wants to and if you criticize her, you're probably just intimidated by her gayness. Fat. Grotesquely obnoxious.
She all but campaigns for Ahmadinejad. She woudl rather see America and Isreal and She doesn't like [more like hates] America, Jews, or Asians, or straight people, or gay people with guns.
Seriously, go play in traffic.......
People should stand up for themselves. If you guys let this one slide, there will be more asian jokes and sooner or later asians will be laughing stock. When I was a student in Kansas city a white student yelled at me 'What's up CHINK'. I beat him up in front of other students and they all realized we are not going to let them treat us this way.

Good for you, Island Guy.
The problem is that in the past, we Asians have been too nice to whites (and others), letting them get away with verbal and physical abuse. This is why they feel entitled to bash us, bully us, and harass us.
I remember the time an old white guy (probably high on Viagra?) called me 'chink' as he got off the bus. I immediately replied 'white trash.' And he looked at me with such shock but didn't say anything: no doubt thinking how dare some Asian--and a woman, at that--answer back.
I don't condone physical or verbal violence for the most part. But sometimes, drastic problems require drastic solutions.
You have got to be kidding. Everygroup gets made fun of on Saturday night live and other comedy shows. The View is not a news program and those who think it is should have more than there funnybone checked. Why are we so focused on these small issues when there are so many larger issues. Everyone needs to take themselves less seriously or we may as well have a no comedy, no comments talk show. Thatwould be fun wouldn't it?
Kate--
'The View is not a news program and those who think it is should have more than there funnybone checked.'
It's not a news program, but it is a program that has many viewers and hence has a great deal of influence.
'Why are we so focused on these small issues when there are so many larger issues.'
Because it IS a significant issue. Whatever Rosie says, 'ching chong' is a mockery of another ethnicity and race. And this is especially important, as I said earlier, because Asians have not been assimilated into American society the way that WHITE ethnic minorities have. Acts of callousness, violence, and injustice are perpetrated against Asians than on whites--merely on account of their ethnicity and race. If you're German-, Italian- or Irish-American you do not have people constantly bullying you (or at least, it tends to stop in junior high) or passing you over for recognition and promotion. For instance, even now, Asians usually need far higher test scores and grades to get into the more selective universities than do those with obviously Western surnames like O'Malley, Macdonnell, Berger, Jones, etc.
True, being called 'ching-chong' is not the same as racial genocide and does not rank with the horrors of the war in Iraq. But it is borne from the SAME impulse: namely, the derogation of a non-white race.
With only a few minor exceptions, Western history has been nothing but a string of atrocities against non-white peoples, whether it's slavery of the African people or the pillaging and destruction of Chinese palaces (where the Chinese were turned into servants in their own nation)or the attempted genocide of Jews. It's the merciless bombing of Cambodia and Vietnam (in which more bombs were dropped there than in WW2 Europe) in the 1970s. And now, it's the senseless war in Iraq: where more atrocities are committed against the Iraqis than the stupid senseless Saddam himself.
White people need to get their head out of their asses if they really believe that jokes against non-whites are just jokes. If your people had been enslaved, taunted, bullied, exterminated, you would know better.
Sorry, wrote my post too quickly and should have stated instead:
--calling people 'ching-chong' does not rank with racial genocide or the horrors of the war in Iraq.
--where Bush and Blair have committed more atrocities than Saddam himself against the Iraqis.
Anyone who isn't Asian or Asian American: yes, that means the so-called best friends of Asians, as in 'I have a friend who is Asian, who may or may not be offended' or, Asian-by-osmosis, as in, 'I married/date/only go out with Asians even though I am not one myself.' All of you. You don't have a dog in this fight.
You haven't had the same experience of what we experience. You don't go through what some of us have gone through. You don't listen the comments or hateful things said to us. You don't hear or experience the things that are said or done to us over the generations, the media images of Asians propagated by Hollywood to the world, the ideas floating around still in people's minds about who the Asians or their ethnic groups are, that are expressed in these comments below.
You have no right to speak for those of us who are Asian and Asian American. So, shut up.
Because, let's face it, no one asked the blacks if they were offended when people used to call them the N-word, or boy, or by their first names only. Why should we be any different in demanding equal treatment?
'get a grip'??
Hmm, i think barbara walters made a huge mistake in hiring rosie to be on the 'view'. Since she has been on the show there seems to be alot of drama. just today i read that Donald Trump is suing her because of comments she made about him on the show. Then there is the Kelly ripa incdent, then there is the Asain comment incident. Ms. walters need to talk to ms. odonnell about her mouth. However ms. odonnell always say it is her opinion ad she can speak her mind, but sometimes it is best to keep quiet. Now i know people who never watched the View and they say that they watch it to see what rosie 's big mouth is going to say. hey, maybe ms. walters knew that having rosie on the show would be controversial and will bring in ratings, but on the flip side her mouth can also cause ratings to slip and lawsuits.
It said 'The use of the distorted phrases is insulting to the chinese and chinese americans. ive never heard a chinese person say ching chong !
'CHING CHONG'!!! There I said it!......And I'm Asian. OMG, for gods sake..........get over it already! Does anyone really give a crap what a fat, ugly, dike says on national TV???? We all know she is an ignorant PIG..........so what does that make us........to dwell sooooo deeply into her idiotic comments???
All those who agree, should petition her removal from 'The View' and any future talk shows!
Lighten up? Shut up Rosie! Im Asian and I find it very rude. What's with americans these days making fun of Asians? I ride my bus to high school, and I keep hearing these whites, blacks, and mexicans talking mess about Asians, how they talk funny when they say 'Ching Chong' all the time. Well guess what? we dont always use ching chong in our language. There is Japanese, and there isnt ching chong in it. But with Chinese yeah, we may say ching chong in the middle, but there is things we say besides that.
Rosie is a dumb crack head to mention. We do have a sense of humor! You just don't realize it, becuase you all are so busy making fun of us! Cant wait to leave america.
If we didnt have a sense of humor, we'd be broke, and all of Asia would be fallen apart! But its not! Its wonderful in Asia! Asia didnt do anything to america, and yet the make fun of us!!! Just Like Rosie for example! That stupid doughnut! Asia is a beautiful place with good people. Look at bush, your stupid president! He sends his army to Iraq to kill people everyday! and soon america will be torn apart if bush doesnt get impeached by your votes and by his republicans! Rosie is a fat lard american!
I think the View has really gone down hill since Rosie joined the cast I enjoyed this show until it got so NASTY and Rosie is the reason it will go down. I hope Donald Trump buys it and gets rid of her.
To Rosie and all those of you who don't fully understand where this 'deragatory' statement comes from and why 'it is' offensive:
'Ching Chong is an ethnic slur directed at people of Chinese ancestry. It is most frequently encountered in the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
Possible origin of the word is that of a bastardization of the Chinese noun Ching Chao, which literally translates as 'Ching Dynasty.' The prevalant usage of this insult began during the gold-rush eras of 18th Century in Ballarat, Australia, when the Chinese gold-prospectors were of Ching Dynasty origin.
Sometimes 'ching chong' is combined with 'Chinaman'; the combination is often used in nursery-style rhymes, such as:
Ching Chong Chinaman sitting on a fence
Trying to make a dollar out of fifteen cents.
Along came a choo-choo train,
Knocked him in the cuckoo-brain,
And that was the end of the fifteen cents.'
The gold rush incidents spur on a series of 'Hate Crimes' which resonates to this very day---as demonstated by ignorant usage of the word 'Ching Chong' by 'Has Been' comedians.
So, for all you ignorant folks out there who think Asians should 'Lighten up'
Look into your ancestry and see if your ancestors were one of these idiots who tormented our 'Asian American' brothers
Rosie should show sincerity when she apologizes, In the catch up show where she did, she also noted that she asked her 'Asian American' assistant if she was offended by her statement to which she said the assistant said no.... then Jill, who is also on the show, proceeds to poll 2 asians in the audience, the same question with the same answer...
Come On! View, just apologize without the fanfare. It's Sooooo Insincere!!!!
Its these acts of idiocy that propells and keeps this stereotype alive and have ignorant people believe its ok to joke on offensive racial lines--and actually think its funny.
this is to rosie o donnel (You) Ate up all the damn pizza
(Are) Which Burger King you go to?
(Not) Just to fill up ya belly
(Funny) No need to prove ya heavy
Why waste time to state the obvious
Ya audience is obviously just as idiotic
You imposter of a comic
I never seen The View, don't wanna see if it's true
That it's you that most likely has a penis in the crew
You non-joke-telling, shaped like a middle line backer
Special guest on the season finale of Fear Factor
But you gotta do more than eat a roach
Wanna win 50 thousand? Stick ya tongue down her throat
No thanks, I turn down the offer cuz it's wrong
Honestly, I'd rather see Barbara Walters in a thong
Don't get it twisted, I ain't shallow how with these misses
But she couldn't turn the lights on if you showed her where the switch is
