I heard on the news this morning driving to work. I'm a Asian from Canada and I thought it is was offensive. I agree with one of the previous comments that Asians do not complain as much about racism, but sometimes it can go too far. I understand if this was in a night Comedy club however, this show is on day time t.v.. I feel that Rosie's joke was ignorant.
Lost in all this is the fact that 'ching-chong' is also used as a derogatory term used to identify Chinese and other Asians.
My brother was involved in a hate-crime assault. He was stabbed and beaten by three men as they repeatedly called him a 'ching-chong peice of ...'
Well, we certainly know how uptight Asians are. Rosie's right ... those people need to get a sense of humor. I poke fun of black people all the time. They don't seem to mind. Those people know a good laugh.
Should Rosie apologize? If she were smart she would. So I guess then she shouldn't.
Look everybody, I'm a comedian and therefore I have the right to poke fun of ethnic minorities! Well well, shall we see how far Michael Richards carrier can go after his little 'n' word rant... yeah, really funny Mr. so called Comedian.
White people don't realize the extent of Rosie's actions because they have never been racially discriminated against to the level that other racial minorities had to go through in this country. You think it's funny because you don't know how it feels to be a grown adult and have little kids on the street squinting their eyes and saying ching chung ching chung to you just because you look different.
K. Hom, just because making fun of a certain race without getting negative reactions doesn't give you the right to do so in the first place. That's like saying I'm kicking you in the nuts and since you didn't seem to mind, I'll just help myself and keep kicking... do you still mind? I don't think so.
Don't tell Asians to loosen up. Rosie you're a ugly fat flaming bitch... oh loosen up, it was only a joke.
rosie is hypocritical, racist, arrogant and plain impossible to take seriously. she is super sensitive when it comes to gays and lesbias but hyper insensitive about anyone else. wake up rosie. you are not the great humanitarian you are always proposing to be.
Mark. I was being ironical. Read it again.
This is poor reporting even for M&C.
Where did you get the information that Rosie thinks Asians should get over themselves?
I haven't seen that reported anywhere. Maybe it's your interpretation of what Rosie thinks... hardly journalism.
As far as Rosie is concerned, she can joke all she wants - but when others joke about fat people or gay people, she needs to shut her mouth and take it as well. There's no two ways about it; if you're gonna dish it, you'd better be able to take it too.
If Asian Americans need to lighten up and learn to take a joke, shouldn't the same be said to blacks, homosexuals, and Jews?
Rosie O'Donnell lost the right to tell anyone to get over themselves and to lighten up when she ripped into Kelly Ripa. I don't know what happened to that woman, I used to LOVE her, now she's turned into an angry, ugly lesbian, who is giving all lesbians a bad name. I am actually missing Star Jones and I loathe that woman.
'She tried to imitate Chinese.'
Good try, but Chinese people really don't speak like this...
Yes, Asian-Americans need to lighten up. So does Rosie, as a lesbian. So does everyone else in this hypersensitive country.
I'm sorry you got made fun of for being Asian but, guess what, it's just human nature for kids (and adults) to be jerks like that. I got made fun of for being Italian by the WASPS at my school. People even threw spaghetti sauce on my parents' front door when we moved into our all-WASP neighborhood right before I was born. You don't see me out protesting the Sopranos because of it.
I got shoved into lockers alot in High School after I came out as gay, too. Such is life. Brush yourself off and move on.
Seriously, I would rather put up with anti-Italian taunts (not that anti-Italian sentiment is that common anymore) or anti-gay taunts than live in a country where no one can say anything for fear of offending some hypersensitive minority.
Ok, I understand that it was a joke, but that doesn't make it a good one. And why is this so surprising? If that had been a black joke, people still would have gotten ticked and rightly so.
I may not be Asian American but I have Asian American relatives including my darling cousin who got her head cracked open because some kids thought it'd be funny to tie her up with duct tape and make her stand on a moving bus! Not to mention every other racist thing they've done against her.
But yeah, point being, she ticked off a comunity with a race joke, that was bad, she should apologize, we move on.
For those of you, who are not offended, wait until someone mocks you like that and you’ll probably be the first to complain too. We all understand that she’s a washed up, not funny individual who was picked to be on the view because of budget cuts. Maybe Rosie and Michael Richards should team up and share their racist remarks with each other because WE don’t want to hear it.
Lighten up? why don't you tell that to all the blacks and gays and jews when you make fun of them. why is it okay for Rosie to make fun of asians? I was born in this country and grew up in NYC and was made fun of almost everyday growing, hearing ching chong, etc. I find this highly offensive and Rosie is a hypocrite. I used to like her but not I am boycotting her and Barbara Walters and so is all my asian american friends. Barbara's boycotting Mel Gibson films because he said anti semetic remarks while he was drunk. How about the anti asian remarks Rosie made while she was sober. Shame on Barbara and Rosie. I say all asians stick together and boycott them!
Marc,
You seem clueless. So, if I put my hand on your mouth, don't be indignant but suck on one of my delectable fingers. Shoot, if i walk around with limp wrist, i hope my homo brother doesn't call me homophobe? When a staight boy calls me 'fag,' why should i be upset 'cause my fag brothers call me fag all the time! Why can't I call a black person 'nigger' when they call each other 'nigger.' Marc, get your head out of your anal orifice and get some fresh air. Ching chong, ching chong, it's only gibberish, why all the pcness...'cause my chink brothers are way too sensitive. I only wish Rosie had a chinaman's hat on and made her eyes really slanty, then it no one would've mistaken it for a true genuine comedy.
I work P/T weekends (for past 3 yrs) as a Night Auditor in a hotel in Atlanta and we mostly have wedding guests staying on during weekends. We have hosted guests of pretty much all ethnic groups, mostly whites (anglo, irish, italian, etc. ), some blacks, some asians, some hispanic etc. I was born in China and tho not a Buddhist (born Confucist but atheist) I get taunted with Chink/Gook jokes all the time. Our hotel hosted the worst group of all - an Hindi mostly all Indians from India at our hotel - just this weekend Dec 9th. While I was just doing my front-desk duties these Indians made racist terrorist and anti-Chinese jokes, for no reason, stole from the hotel store and pretty much destroyed some rooms in the hotel. The Indians who are ranting/raving here should look in your own hearts. I am personally of the opinion that Indians are the mos
So if I made a mockery of a lesbian's lifestyle, but then labeled it as a 'joke' or my 'sense of humor', would that be okay? Where was Rosie's 'lightened up' attitude when it came to Kelly Rippa's completely innocent comment about not wanting someone's hand over her mouth? Rosie is the last person to be telling how others should feel when she herself has overblown an incident that in no way had any underlying negative intentions.
The most insulting part of all this is Rosie is not apologetic at all. She's accusing us of being too sensitive! She's the same as Kramer, but he was smart enough to apologize. I hope her kids get teased for having two mothers.
Rosie might not have wanted to insult or degrade Asians on purpose but what she did, mocking the Chinese language, resembled the action of those who do. Most Asians growing up in this country could recall school playground taunts by Caucasian bullies going 'ching chong, ching chong...', sometimes with their fingers stretching out their eyes, narrowing them to further the affects of Asian mocking.
If someone had said 'Danny De Vito made news even in the gay press. The announcer on a gay radio station this morning said....' then proceeded to imitate the effeminate voice of a gay man...I'd bet Rosie would be up in arms, claiming gay bashing. Look at the way she criticized Kelly Ripa for having objected to Clay Aiken putting his hand on her (Kelly's) mouth to prevent her from speaking.
The best thing for Rosie to do would be to go on the View and said she was sorry she offended Asians by her mimicking last Thursday. That she did not want to offend anyone and she realizes now such an action, while may be innocent on her part, could be hurtful to people and she would not do it again. Come clean, Rosie...
Rosie needs to apologize for her unintentional racism. I believe her when she says she comes in peace. However, as a lesbian she must know what it feels like to be ridiculed. I am asian... and hearing that impression using those words is demeaning.
