Gwyneth Paltrow backtracks

Dec 5, 2006, 12:30 GMT

Gwyneth Paltrow claims she would "never, ever" make anti-American comments.

The Oscar-winning actress - who splits her time between London and New York with her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin - says she is "deeply upset" by the remarks accredited to her this week and claims she was misquoted.

The 34-year-old actress was quoted as saying: "The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans."

Gwyneth told People magazine: "First of all I feel so lucky to be American. When you look at the rest of the world, we're so lucky. I feel so proud to be American. I felt so upset to be completely misconstrued and I never, ever would have said that.

"I definitely did not say that I think the British are more intelligent and civilized than Americans. I am a New York girl. I live in England half the time because I'm married to an English guy. It's not like I've left America."

She added: "I said that Europe is a much older culture and there's a difference. I always say in America, people live to work and in Europe, people work to live. There are positives in both."

Despite her pro-American stance, Gwyneth has been quoted criticising her homeland on other several other occasions.

In January 2006, the actress said: "I love the English way, which is not as capitalistic as it is in America. People don't talk about work and money - they talk about interesting things at dinner parties."

Then in February this year, Gwyneth - who has two children, daughter Apple, two, and seven-month-old son Moses - said she favours English people over Americans.

She was quoted as saying: "Brits are far more intelligent and civilised than Americans. I love the fact that you can hail a taxi and just pick up your pram and put in the back of the cab without having to collapse it."

If Miss Paltro loves the English so much, maybe, just maybe she should make her body a permanent fixture THERE!!

Her apology is too little and too late. I hope Americans will understand and won't be seeing her movies if she makes any. Her and Madonna should stay in England and keep each other company and fake their accents.

Paltrow can stay out of America as far as Americans are concerned. Let the English keep her millions coming in. I will no longer see any of her movies again. She can join the Dixie Chicks and anyone else that slams America.

I understand completely the feelings that Gwyneth Paltrow has of Americans. I think Americans should wake up and quit being so selfish and ignorant. I understand the comment that people just talk about work and money. What is wrong with enjoying another country? If your going to critize people for there opinions of Americans why not start with authors who are constantly taking surveys of attitudes around the world. I just got done reading a hardback that was recently released about why the world hates American. The top of the list is Americans selfishness and greed. The humorous part is that according to the survey Americans were on the top of the list who felt that way. Leave Gwyneth alone!

The comments by the first to ladies express my thoughts also! People who love this country do not make statements such as hers to anyone whom might try and construe their words. She has exposed her true political leanings.I would bet she is a democrat and thinks that if she displays remorse that we will give her an excuse! I know it will not work on me and i will never watch her movies again.

Given that Ms. Paltrow-Martin grew up and work in the vapid atmosphere of Hollywood I will make allowences for her ignorance and inexperience. But if she considers Madonna, a woman who walked down the street nude in front of a photographer for profit, as an exemplar or how to respond to cultural differences then I suggest the next time she jets over to Paris to have her hair highlighted she stay there. The British deserve a better resident.

If the British are so intellectually superior to Americans, how come she was so able to stick her foot into her own mouth?

Regarding those who would comment that Ms. Paltrow is correct in her assesment of Americans I wish to point out some history: Britain turned the world into its own personal empire for power and profit, America is dealing with the consequences of that empire even now. No one country has the market cornered on virtue or vice, intellence or ignorance. But if you think America suffers from the latter, stop coplaining about it and make a change.

Don't worry Gwyneth, we're not all stupid...Dec 5th, 2006 - 15:01:28

It's the job of the press, to blow things out of context. Gwyneth Paltrow is a good person, and hasn't said anything bad about America. Since when has the USA not been capitalistic. Just watch our TV. If we could ever get off our high horse, maybe we could learn something from other cultures. I've been to the UK. You could hang with someone for weeks, and not know what they do for a living. That's not the case in USA. Look how the press twisted John Lennon's words about Jesus Christ. Our family wasn't stupid enough to break our Beatle albums. The press is just doing their job, by knocking Gwyneth. It's hard to believe people jump on the bandwagon and send 'hate mail' about Gwyneth Paltrow.

As an elementary school teacher for twenty-five years with a Master's degree in education, I can tell you that the greatest deterrent to our children's educations is Hollywood and the trash they produce that permeates every inch of our society. Perhaps our teen-agers do not grow up into 'intelligent and civilized' dinner partners is because their minds have been so polluted by what Hollywood and the likes of Ms. Paltrow and Madonna spew forth. Ms. Paltrow is truly just another ordinary person, but because of her 'celebrity status', what she says appears on TV, and ignorant people listen. Come home, Ms. Paltrow, become a teacher, get down and dirty with the working folks and see if your perspective doesn't change somewhat.

This child of privilege, Miss Gwyneth, has the nerve to cut down the very country of her birth, a country and people who have gone to her movies and helped make her wealthy. This stuck up New York chick was born into a family who had wealth through their 'work', she went to the best schools, lived in the nicest homes and made a living of her own through our capitalist system. She had everything many of us never did. She can stay in England forever, raise her spoiled brats there and give up her citizenship for all I care. What an ingrate. Good ridance, Gwynnie, I'll never go to one of your movies again and also, you seriously did not deserve the Oscar you received, (Cate Blanchett did) you're not that good. God Bless America!!
