Gwyneth Paltrow, under fire for her damning comments regarding American versus alleged superior British intelligence, has put the blame on interpreters "misconstruing" her bad Spanish language skills, she reveals in People magazine exclusively.
Paltrow was quoted as telling the Portuguese newspaper Diario De Noticias, "The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans."
"I felt so upset to be completely misconstrued and I never, ever would have said that," says tthe Estee Lauder spokesperson.
"I definitely did not say that I think the British are more intelligent and civilized than Americans. I am a New York girl, that's how I always think of myself and see myself."
"I live in England half the time because I'm married to an English guy. It's not like I've left America."
People reports that Paltrow denies giving the Portuguese paper an interview, though she did address a group attended press conference, speaking in Spanish to the reporters for endorsement work she did in Spain.
"This is what I said. I said that Europe is a much older culture and there's a difference. I always say in America, people live to work and in Europe, people work to live. There are positives in both," says the actress, adding,
"Obviously I need to go back to seventh-grade Spanish!" Said Paltrow. Reported People magazine.

Proves her point, doesn't she.
I agree with bascic idea that the British are far superior to Merkins, just 1 min listening to 'W' should prove this as fact.

Basic not bascic...Americans not Merkins. You spell out the number one. Would you be British or American?
I would like to see the orignial Spanish of the published translation to compare with the statement Gweneth made.
My assumption is that most American's would not make that kind of statement regarless if they lived part-time here in the UK or elsewhere.
The girl is beautiful, but not real bright and a snob. She should just keep her mouth shut and pose.
there are bright british and dumb british, bright americans and dumb americans - that's just the way of the world!
who cares what a celebrity thinks? c'mon!
Gwenyth speaks Spanish with a PERFECT CASTILLIAN ACCENT! I saw her interviewed years ago on a Madrid based television network and she was near if not native speaking.
She is way beyond the 'Donde esta el bano?' level and knows exactly what she is saying.
Well she is mostly right. The average American is much stupider than the average Briton. Its the education system mostly. Have you seen american high schools these days??
Gwen ought to do more than go back to seventh grade Spanish class, she should go live in Britain with her hubby! If she has a problem with this country and it's inhabitants than she should at least have the guts to stand behind her arrogant comments. Back pedaling is usually ones way of getting out of hot water when they know they have made a bad impression.
Hey, at least we're smarter than the Australians! :-) Seriously, every country's got a few smart people and lots and lots of dumb ones.

I have to support Ms. Paltrow in this matter. She is a lady and has always conducted herself in that manner whether on screen or in her private life. It is perhaps because of her inherent noble mannerisms that she is targeted for discredit by base and low moral reporters. I believe Ms. Paltrow's actions have spoken for her throughout her life where her Spanish skills cannot follow.
