EPA/CIRO FUSCOThe Italian security expert, Mario Scaramella, who met at a sushi bar in London on Nov. 1st with Litvinenko the day he fell fatally ill with radiation poisoning, has also tested positive for the substance, British authorities reported Friday.Scaramella tested positive for polonium-210, the rare isotope found in Litvinenko's body, according to law enforcement officials speaking on condition of anonymity, reports the AP out of Russia.Litvinenko died on Nov. 23rd at a London hospital and pathologists have commenced an autopsy today.Scaramella, who claimed this week said doctors had cleared him, openly discussed an e-mail he received from a source naming the killers of Anna Politkovskaya, the assasinated journalist. The alleged e-mail outlined that he and Litvinenko were also on a hit list.Traces of radiation have also been found at a dozen sites in Britain and five jetliners were being investigated for possible contamination as British authorities widened their investigation.Though not confirmed, doctors in Moscow also have said they believed Yegor Gaidar, a former premier and member of the liberal opposition party, may also have been poisoned during a conference Nov. 24th in Ireland.The BBC reports that in 1998, Litvinenko accused his superiors of ordering him to kill the oil tycoon Boris Berezovsky and spent nine months in jail from 1999 on charges of "abuse of office." Litvinenko was later acquitted, and in 2000 sought asylum in England.

The radiation spy scandal took a sensational twist last night with the revelation that KGB defector Alexander Litvinenko had converted to Islam before he died.

Scotland Yard detectives are now trying to discover if he had any secret links with Islamic extremist terror groups.

Their biggest fear is that the former Soviet spy, who died of polonium-210 poisoning in a London hospital, may have been helping Al Qaeda terrorists or other extremist groups get hold of radioactive material to be used in a devastating “dirty” atom bomb.'
