Kate Winslet's tragic first marriage

Kate Winslet has branded her first marriage "tragic".

The 'Little Children' actress, who was married to director Jim Threapleton for three years, claims she quickly realised the pair's union wouldn't last.

She said: "It is a very tragic situation when you enter into something thinking its right for you and very, very quickly realise it's possibly the most wrong thing you could ever do. There is a sense of impending doom."

Kate, who is now married to 'American Beauty' director Sam Mendes, insists she is still angry with the way she was portrayed after she divorced Jim.

The 31-year-old British star fumed: "Until the divorce I was held up as this down-to-earth English rose who could do no wrong. What a disaster that was! How dare I be so squeaky-clean?

She added: "Even when they tried to be really mean to me - calling me fat - I was still unwaveringly determined to say, 'So what? Who cares? Get a life.'"

Kate says the public will never know the real reason why her first marriage fell apart.

She said: "Jim and I have never talked publicly about exactly what happened and why. Nobody will ever know those things, but of course to outsiders it is my fault. It was all down to me because I was the famous person, and he was perceived as the poor little normal underdog."
