Nicole Kidman asks dad to help stop husband's drinking

Nicole Kidman has turned to a top psychologist to help deal with her husband's alcohol problems - her dad.
The 'Moulin Rouge' actress has reportedly been having lengthy phone conversations with her father, Dr Anthony Kidman, ever since country singer Keith Urban checked into a Nashville alcohol rehab centre last Thursday (19.10.06).
A source told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "Nicole's dad is getting her through it with a mix of professional advice, fatherly guidance and Catholic beliefs. Dr Anthony and his wife Janelle are expected to fly to the USA this week to be by their daughter's side."
Keith - who married the 'Stepford Wives' actress in Australia in June - expressed deep regret for the upset his troubles have caused his wife and family.
He said in a statement: "I deeply regret the hurt this has caused Nicole and the ones that love and support me.
"With the strength and unwavering support I am blessed to have from my wife, family and friends, I am determined and resolved to a positive outcome."

A bit harsh don't you think. Let he who is without sin or baggage as you state, cast the first stone. We've all got baggage of some sort or other. Thankfully he's admitted he's got a problem and is doing something about it. I applaud them both for their responsible solution to the situation.
Nichole should marry me. I'm not an alcoholic, and I wouldn't put her through such B.S.
I know it sounds a bit harsh when Bob gave his opinion but, after 15 years working in the field of alcohol and drug addiction, he is partially right.
Being sympathetic and supportive is important but, if the person does not want to change their behavior, then it is going no where but a family heartache. It is so easy to become an enabler when you love the addict, but you must step back and allow him/her to do this own his own. If not, then the person has someone else to blame for any relapses. Not my fault! I htink Nicole should take her kids and herself out of this self-destructive mess until Urban has been clean for seversal months.
Didn't Nicole give him something like $650Gs to stay clean in their pre-nup, according to the rags? I'd have done it for half!
I'd marry Keith in a heartbeat.....Admitting himself into treatment shows he wants to get sober and stay that way. He's the most amazing musician I've ever seen - I love his music. I lived with an alcoholic father who never stopped drinking until the day he died, so I know what it's like to live with an alcoholic who won't admit their problem. Keith has taken the steps to recovery. I believe he'll overcome this, although it is a life-long battle.
Nicole HAD to have known what she was getting in to by marrying Keith Urban. He has a history already of substance abuse. She shouldnt be acting shocked and dismayed. Give me a break. Where are her kids too? They are never with her it appears.

It seems Hollywood's latest fashion has really caught on! First Mel, then Robin and now this clown. What a publicity stunt. A whole lot of B.S.! Can't wait to see who is next. 'Poor me, I have a problem, feel sorry for me and OH, by the way, buy my music (or my films).' As they say in the business, any publicity is good publicity!

Leah, Tom and Kate have the kids and they reside with him... as per their (Tom and NIcole) agreement. Which may or may not be better for the kids at this point in time. As you know they are both older and probably are well aware of the situation; kids are never given enough credit. Admitting you have a problem is the first step in conquering it. Life is struggle with or without an addiction; it was out on the table long before Nicole decided to marry Keith; most of the country knew. I wish them all the best and pray they can beat this demon. Nicole sure knows how to pick this deadbeats. Its must be embarrassing for her afterall Tom is getting on with his life and she had to pick a losser for a husband. Its very hard to get over a drug addiction, i dont think she needed this at this time in her life, keith might be a lovely person but he has demons to overcome, she cant help him if he wont help himself. If i were her i will drop him like a bad rash. Everyone deserved to be happy, Nicole he cant make you happy while he cant make himself happy first. He is selfish and childish, he is a little boy that needs his mum. Am not wicked am just honest, if i were your parent i wont have given my blessing to you marrying a person with a history of drug addiction. Life is too short to waste on people that cant handle real issues. All the money in this world cannot buy you love and happiness, Nicole next time choose carefully, in time to come you will divorce Keith, i bet my life of it. The only suggestion I have for the commenters on this page is, please don't be flip or glib or cynical about this situation; it is extremely serious and dangerous and life threatening.
I hope their marriage will be saved by the strength they both share as amazingly talented people [Keith Urban is a killer guitar player and has a great band, and Nicole Kidman is absolute perfection as a film actress], and I pray they will overcome this difficulty using their talent and love for each other, which which can be equally strong in the right people.
On the other hand, I cannot help but wonder if Keith Urban has a debilitating self-esteem issue which was magnified by his marriage to Nicole; does he feel not worthy of her, or something along those lines?
Three months after marrying her, he goes into rehab. They've got a prenup that says if he drinks again, there's no money. Sounds like Keith Kidman wants out of this publicity fueled marriage.

Knowing quite a few people who don't even know that drinking is a problem, I applaud Keith for admitting it and seeking treatment, and Nicole for seeking help for herself to cope with this situation - because in these cases, both spouses need support. Drinking and alcoholism is a disease. If you reject people who suffer from it without supporting them in getting treatment, what's next?
Keith's problems just happen to be public knowledge. Everybody's got issues, we just don't know about them...........yet!

Every thing will work out. Go to alanon and when keith gets out of rehab, if he goes to a 12 step program he will be ok too. Hold strong to your faith in our savior jesus christ I promise it will get better. I lived with a alcoholic for 25 years. I stayed because I tried to focus on the good. Keith has good too. So just take it a day at a time.

I love all this talk of baggage, battling, and losers. This People magazine spoon fed sophomoric view of what and alcoholic is. Some fail, sure, but many accept their malady and stop drinking and have wonderful lives. This Country was founded by alcoholics, these losers, as narrow minded Betty labels them, are the very people that have made her laugh, cry, and feel alive. I have many friends who have stopped drinking and go anywhere alcohol is served and have a great time. This guy can accept the allergy to alcohol he has and move on. I have an allergy to walnuts, if I eat them my body reacts negatively so I have accepted this and don’t eat walnuts!! No one has ever called me a looser because I can’t handle my walnuts. Find acceptance, support and love and you can have a great life without walnuts er uh I mean alcohol. Nicole don’t help Keith help yourself…go to Alanon!!

I totally support Nichole and Keith. One does not know what it's like to need help. No I do not do drugs, etc. However, I suffer from depression bouts once in a while (less, and less). My husband was and has been supportive 100%. People, have some sympathy....one ever knows what the future holds. It could be your son, nephew, some family member in the future that falls under this situation. Pray for him and Nicole, instead of having such a harsh, cold heart.
Like nicole is going to read this,, hah! She has better things to do.. I predict they will be divorced within a year..
Drug Addicts and Alcoholics have about a 17% chance of recovering. I wouldn't have taken the chance with my children for 17%. I would expect to see him in an out of rehab and after his second trip, Nicole will leave because she will be looking at losing her kids. What was she thinking? Leopards don't change there spots. It is only judgement if your opinion isn't a proven medical statistic.

Isn't it just ironic how people want to condemn Keith. Well, I agree with Carrie, let him who is without sin or baggage cast the first stone. Alcholism is an illiness just like cancer or anything else. Give the guy a benefit of a doubt. Apparently Nicole is a wonderful person and is truly in love with him or she would not have married him in the first place. I say God Bless Nicole and Keith and my prayers are with them.
Let us all be careful about pointing a finger at someone because when you do there are three pointed back at you! A good percentage of the world's population is on some kind of drug whether it is prescribed by a doctor or they are self medicating. The daily news in various media channels (newspapers, magazines, radio, and TV) is filled with one horror story after another. It is a wonder that most folks practice moderation in their drug use given the state of the world not to mention the pressure most folks are under just to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. I will keep both Keith and Nicole in my thoughts and prayers. They will need a dose of good luck besides. But, you never know unless you try. I give them credit for at least making the effort to rehab instead of choosing the avenue of denial. By the way, does someone out there know how many drinks you can have a day without worrying that someone else thinks you have a problem and should be in rehab?
She fell in love with an alcoholic because of his alcoholic behavior. Some people find it very attractive to have a spouse they can control through guilt or other tact. Its going to be tough for both of them because if he does get sober he is going to have to change most everything in his life, including his behavior and how he relates to people. She may not like the new husband because he will begin to set his own bounderies and take control of his own life.
She is a very strong woman and I believe she needs a man who can let her be the strong one. As her husband gets up on his feet he's going to start pushing that aspect of her personality away. That may cause problems.
The up side of this is that if she can change too she will get to experience the most honest and real realationship a couple can have. As long as he works the steps and she does her own program (can you say.. Alanon.. Hummm?) I believe that they can make it work.

Why doesn't everybody just mind their own business! Let them work through their own problems. She is seeking help from her father & mother, as she should.
My heart breaks for Keith. And I'm glad that Nicole is being the wife that she should be and standing by her man. There are sooooooooooo many people in this world with addictions. And where would they be if everyone turned their backs on them?????????? Some kind of friend or family member you all would be if tradgedy ever struck someone close to you. Or, heaven forbid, the tradgedy strike you!!!! I'm glad that some of you aren't friends of mine because you sure can't be depended upon. I praise Keith for admitting he has a problem and he made the choice to do something about it. I pray for a positive outcome and that this doesn't affect his career in any way, shape or form. I love him and appreciate his awesome talent. I am sitting on 'go' waiting for his new album. And I will continue to support him and his music. I LOVE YOU KEITH!!!
I just watched 'Walk the Line' last night, sounds so familiar. June made Johnny wait for at least 10 years before she married him and then only after he was clean for six months, but she stood by him and with her help and love he made it. Nicole could have made Keith gravel a bit longer though.

the natural condition of an addict is using/drinking. making healthy daily decisions, devising some sort of spiritual life, and realizing you're powerless can help avoid this natural condition.
left to his/her own devises, and without these things, the addict will use/drink, eventually. no exceptions.
relapse unfortunately is part of almost every addicts path and it's particularly tough for rich folks who think they can buy their way out of their addiction.
there is nothing ms. kiddman do to help her husband except let him experience the consequences of his own behavior. 'family support' has hindered more alcoholics/addicts than it is helped.
she should be very wary right now, imo.

If I were in Nicole's situation, I would support my new husband through the first rehab effort. If he went back to the addiction/s, that would be it--I would be out of the marriage. Addiction can completely derail one's life, and I would not want to be destroyed by another. Still, this is only speculation because I am not in that situation. The fact the Keith was sober since 1998 is a good sign. He might be able to pull it off. I hope so for both of them.
I am so tired of the U.S. country singers! I feel so deeply sorry for Nicole. I just hope she comes through this unscathed. She is wonderful and so regal. She needs to show Keith Urban the door if he does not straighten up. Niki Taylor my A##. WAKE UP KEITH, this is NICOLE. URGH
I admit, I am the biggest Keith Urban fan. He's the most awesome singer, songwriter, musician we've seen in a long time. I could not name two movies Nicole Kidman has even been in. I do know Keith must love her very much, and if she loves him, she will stay by his side. I know I would! True fans stick with you no matter what! Can't wait for the new CD. Wish you both well.
Nicole probably drove him to drink, what with her and her psycho-father telling Keith what he should do and think. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually drive him to kill himself.
Well, now we know why Tom has the kids. Bad choice Nicole - putting your kids in harm's way by marrying an alcoholic/drug addict. If I were Tom Cruise I'd never let the kids go back.
