Haley Joel Osment's child star rite of passage

LOS ANGELES - Child actor and now a grown up, Haley Joel Osment, the star in the 1999 movie "The Sixth Sense," was sentenced to probation on Thursday after pleading no contest to charges of drunken driving and marijuana possession. REUTERS/Jim RuymenOsment, 18, was also ordered to complete alcohol rehabilitation counseling and pay $1,500 in fines as part of an agreement with prosecutors that called for two misdemeanor counts to be dismissed. His blood alcohol level at the time of the incident registered .16 percent.Nominated for an Oscar at age 11, Osment was not present. His attorney David Wood, was, and plead no contest.In California, a no contest plea is equivalent to pleading guilty. Osment joins many other successful child actors in breaching the law in matters of driving under the influence.Osment lost control of his 1995 Saturn at about 1 a.m. on July 20th. The former child star suffered a broken rib and a shoulder injury when the car flipped over.
