Los Angeles - Actor-director Mel Gibson took his apology for an anti-Semitic tirade to US television viewers Tuesday, telling an interviewer that his comments were 'just a stupid rambling of a drunkard.'

Gibson's exchange with Diane Sawyer, which is to air in two parts on Thursday and Friday, was his first media interview since the notorious July incident in which he was arrested for drunk driving and then launched into a nasty verbal attack, in which he blamed Jews for starting all the world's wars.

Gibson told Sawyer that he was working hard to heal himself and to 'allay the fears of others and to heal them if they had any heart wounds from something I may have said.'

'It was just the stupid rambling of a drunkard, you know and ... the last thing I want to be is that kind of monster,' he said.

Gibson, whose latest movie Apocalypto hits cinemas in December, pleaded no contest to drunk driving charges and is undergoing rehabilitation for alcohol abuse.

I've been drunk and said regrettable, stupid things. But I have never become a bigot or a racist because I am neither. The 'drunken ramblings' were a peek into his real thoughts. I'm not so naive as to believe his ramblings were uncharacteristic of his true feelings. Oh, and wasn't Jesus Jewish? I thought he liked Jesus.

They should hire Mel to make successful movies! All the studios turned down the Passion. After all, who'd want to see a movie about jesus?(!)It's not against the law to dislike jews.

His father is the racist, Mr. Gibson has had to endure... being subjected to that kind of youth, it's no wonder that such ramblings would come forth from a drunken state. I don't believe he is the bigot that all you who condemn him, believe him to be... it just doesn't show up in his work, and I don't believe he's totally insincere in his apologies. It seems he's trying, so lighten up... true colors reveal over time, not one drunken night.

Cut the man a break, he's suffered enough already. It's too bad the cop who arrested him felt this needed to be released. Were it anyone else, it never woud have been brought to light.

No one know's what abuse he's had as a child. People, disliked his parents and there four said awful hurtful things. Believe me, I know how cruel, children can be to other children, just becouse of one or both parents, not being what others think they should be.My Mother, was Native American, and I've been on the receiving side of that abuse. So please, don't judge him, untill you walk a mile in his shoes. Hes one of the best,I still cry when I watch Brave Heart, where he plays Wallace. I've worn one set,of the movie out and got another set.California, must be really bad on DUI's. Here in Tn. first part of 2006,A woman got 4 years probation for killing some one. The officer should be ashame of himself, The DUI, should be public, but what he said, shouldn't. AfTER all he didn't confess to a crime.

If you were that famous and successful and managed to work your self into a posistion where everyone monitors your every move... and your drunk and make a mistake. The entire world will hear about it... You can't judge someone based on the media because the media only brings out the mistakes... not the good things. (for the most part) Most of what we read or hear on the media is out of context. Remember the Big Fish story. He's obviously a good guy. Besides, who cares about Mel Gibson what about what else is going on in the world...

Mel Gibson is just another Hollywood idiot. He alwaysed seemed like a good guy, and maybe he is. I've said many o stupid things when I was drunk. But it was always what I truly felt. Alcohol just removes that filter you have that says 'You shouldn't say that.' We are all products of our upbringing. A child that was abused will typically abuse when they become a parent. Mel was raised by a racist, so more than likely he's a racist. I'll still go see a Mel Gibson movie, if it looks good. I see this apology as just a PR move for forgivenes so his movie won't bomb from the backlash. Mel's got problems that he has to deal with. So Mel take care of your own backyard, just don't expect me to give a crap.

Jesse Jackson denigrated the jews, called them 'Hymies', where was his confession? Where was the lib press on that? No apologies necessary Reverend(!?)

You see, there is a different standard for each of us, which is why folks like me HOPE people will do this. It illustrates the prejudice of the left. Every time this happens, another person says 'gee, Jesse did this too!'

Gibson is being punished for his movie, plain and simple. He was targeted by Jewish anti-Christians for his portrayal of the Jews in the Passion.

Granted, he fell right in, but Jackson was let off the hook, immediately. Did the liberal press go on and on? Not a chance! No, Gibson made his bed, but the Lib press is going to hammer his butt.
