Mel Gibson's primetime mea culpa for remarks
By Stone Martindale Oct 10, 2006, 21:04 GMT
LOS ANGELES - Actor Mel Gibson will be seen in a one time interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer to apologize for his anti-Semitic outburst after a drunk driving arrest last summer was “just the stupid rambling of a drunkard” and he does not want people to think him less than human.
In an interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer to air on “Good Morning America” Thursday and Friday, Gibson said he needed to heal himself and “allay the fears of others and to heal them if they had any heart wounds from something I may have said.”
“It was just the stupid rambling of a drunkard, you know and ... the last thing I want to be is that kind of monster,” he said.
Gibson was arrested in July on suspicion of drunken driving after being caught speeding on a highway in Malibu, California. Gibson subsequently launched into an anti-Semitic tirade, accusing Jews of starting all wars and demanding to know if his arresting officer, Deputy Mee was Jewish.
The incident sparked worldwide media frenzy and speculation about Gibson’s Hollywood career being damaged.
Gibson has since pleaded no contest to drunk driving charges and was ordered to undergo rehabilitation for alcohol abuse. He also issued apologies for his comments through his spokesman Alan Neirob.
ABC released some excerpts from its interview with Gibson on Tuesday. He last spoke to Sawyer in 2004 when controversy swirled around whether he or his film “The Passion of the Christ” was anti-Semitic, charges that he strongly denied.
Gibson’s latest interview with Sawyer comes as his latest film, “Apocalypto,” is due for release in December.

Mel Gibson was my idol if that is what I had. I thought he was the greatest of all actors, however, since this incident and since his creation of ' The Passion of Christ' I have come to question if he is worthy of my adoration.
It is my information that he is a passionate Roman Catholic and this in itself presents me with a problem considering he has I believe 7 kids who are probably being marched to church regularly and left perhaps in the care of those who have a penchant for abuse.
I am a Christian, however, I do respect all human beings and whatever religion they may choose or may not choose.
To idolize an institution by creating a film which is perhaps promotional to say the least, makes me question why he does not first of all insist that this institution cleanse itself of all abusers of women and children. He should also ensure that women are given equal status within that mold.
His arrest and subsequent comments about fellow human beings and their particular race makes me sick to my stomach and has blown all respect I had for this man as an actor clear into outer space.
