The concept and execution of 'Ugly Betty' is appalling. The star is a lovely young woman with braces and glasses. What idiotic standard of 'beauty' is this? Shame on Selma and the network! Justella

It's called SATIRE. 'Betty' is actually a slang terminology to mean Beautiful.
As in she's such a total Betty. Watch the movie 'Clueless' starring Alicia Silverstone. Ugly Betty is another way of saying she's an ugly beauty. The character is really about a beautiful person on the inside & outside. BUT you can't see it from the way she dresses, combs her hair, wears braces or her standing next to the shallow models who showcase their made-up faces & hair. That's why 'Ugly Betty' is a fab show! We ladies focus so much on our outside appearance that if we DIDN't we would be Ugly Betties too.Think about imagine if we didn't wear any makeup, exercise, style our hair, wear fancy shoes & clothes AND only concentrated on our brains.Hey Maybe this show will start a trend!
