Richards: The drugs don't work
Sep 20, 2006, 15:28 GMT
Keith Richards has given up drugs - because they are too weak.
The Rolling Stones guitarist - who used to be addicted to heroin - no longer experiments with substances because they do not have the same effect as they did before.
Keith, whose drug taking exploits are legendary, insists he would never take modern drugs like ecstasy because they affect the brain.
He revealed in an interview with Q magazine: "I think the quality's gone down. All they do is try and take the high out of everything.
"I don't like the way drugs now are working on your brain area instead of just through the blood stream. That's why I don't take any of them anymore."
Despite his new anti-drug stance, Keith has confessed he enjoyed being high on the painkiller morphine after undergoing brain surgery following his fall from a tree in Fiji this year.
The 62-year-old musician said: "I don't take drugs unless I have to, under great duress with my brain open. I've had a couple of weeks on morphine. I did try to squeeze a little bit more out of the night nurse. She was very accommodating."
