Sean Penn's smoking crime
Sep 15, 2006, 10:54 GMT
Sean Penn is in trouble after lighting up a cigarette in Toronto.
The actor ignored local anti-smoking laws, banning smoking in certain public places, by puffing on a cigarette during a press conference on Sunday (10.09.06).
Jim Watson, who is in charge of implementing the new smoke-free legislation, said: "No one is above the law, whether it's Sean Penn or someone at the local tavern.
"I certainly hope the Toronto International Film Festival would remind, in a not-so-subtle fashion, that guests coming here shouldn't simply go out and snub their nose at our laws."
Michael Perly, executive director of the Ontario Campaign for Action on Tobacco, has also attacked the 'All The Kings Men' star for flouting the rules.
He said: "It was such a flagrant breach of the law. It absolutely should be a target."
The Smoke-Free Ontario Act bans smoking in enclosed public spaces and workplaces. That includes outdoor stadiums and company vehicles.
If officials do decide to prosecute, Penn could receive a $305 fine.

This is good publicity for the non-smoking act. Fine a high profile celebrity, and get some awareness that smokers are no longer welcome in a sane community.
No longer welcome in a *sane* community?? What the hell is that? Aside from the fact that I'm sure you are in a position to judge whether or not a community is *sane*, what do the two have in common? If you are referring to smoking being stupid, I agree, but I highly doubt that you yourself are free of any stupidity or wrong doings. Perhaps you shouldn't be welcome in a *sane* community.
Send this dictator-loving socialist back to Iraq!
A sane community or person would be one that does not destroy itself purposefully.
Do you think smoking is sane in a matter of logic, not of judgement?
Being a celebrity, does make him a target and if punishment is need, community service is best. But was it as stated 'It was such a flagrant breach of the law. It absolutely should be a target.' or a reaction of habit. Any smoker can tell you, the new laws were very difficult and took time to adapt to.
Granted smoking is bad for your health, and would never have been allowed for so long had it not been so profitable to our leaders. Then again, how much of the tonnes of pollutants being pumped into our environment on a daily basis come from smokers verses say the US?
And the KSO comment is a clear example of the lack of relationship between the presents of a notable I.Q. and ability to read/write.
I like this law, it will let the non smokers have a chance to breath freely while in a public place.
The officers are exactly right to fine Sean Penn. Just because he is a celebrately he shouldn't be treated like a god.
Kiki- you always did have the right to clean air- why the hell you nico-nazis think you have to breath it right beside me,I don't know [what's next, I can't pass gas-you know'fart' without having you clowns squalking and whining]-there are thousands of square miles where you can breath all you want- seems to me that too many of your type have way too much free time on your hands -these no smoking laws are only politically correct and expedient and that's all and I think Sean Penn should be given a medal! Maybe if we 'nice' Canadians stood up to this kind of idiocy like he obviously has, we wouldn't have the garbage running this country like we've had for tha last decade!!!!
I love to see how indignant these people are about the law been broken, and their words of disrespecting the law. Having lived in Toronto for some four years one can almost bet these same people after their indignant outburst at the laws been broken, get into their car and fly down the 401 (100kms zone) at 140kms/hour and consider that OK, it Ok to break those laws they are stupid, it’s a minor offence, non more than or less than the smokeing laws, I have had this argument a number of times with those who love to ban, and impose more laws. Who has what right? I don’t smoke, I like the smoke free areas, but one also has a freedom of choice, and can avoid placed that allow smoking, and also a foreigner may have ignorance of the law.
