Nothing like a lane: Australia's Dame Edna honoured

Sydney - The Barry Humphries character Dame Edna Everage will follow in the footsteps of veteran rockers AC/DC and be honoured by her Melbourne hometown by having a street named after her, tourism authorities in the Victorian state capital said Thursday. Brown Alley in the centre of Australia's second-biggest city will be renamed Dame Edna Place. 'Dame Edna has helped put Melbourne on the map for 50 years and now we should return the favour,' Lord Mayor John So said. 'Dame Edna should forever have her own place in Melbourne.' In December, Melbourne is hosting Ednafest, a series of events and exhibitions to celebrate the success of a character Humphries dreamed up when he was a student in Melbourne. A highlight of Ednafest will be an exhibition of some of Dame Edna's collection of elaborate evening gowns. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
